What bothers me is that lawyer woman's show that is now on CNN. Entertainment as news. The only things I watch now are Leno's monologue (wish Carson was still on), the news, Dobbs, and Trailer Park Boys if it happens to be on. I do rent a lot of movies though.

I dunno, call me a media saturated fool, but I get a kick out of Survivor. It's quite a study of people and their illusions about themselves. The old saw about people seeing the faults of others much better than they see they're own is on full display here.

The current incarnation has plenty of that. One guy recently voted off, a strong young black dude, was oblivious to the abuse he doled out to his tribe-mates. He spent half the day sleeping and did little apparent work, at least according to everyone else, and he thought nothing of dumping harsh remarks on people he felt superior to, which was most everybody.

Another guy, this Shane character, doesn't have a clue about how seriously he takes himself. Going on about how he swore this or that "on his son's name." Jeez dude, make your vows based on you and your backside.

Yeah, sure, they're surrounded by camermen but these are real people, warts and all, displaying real flaws and attributes, in varying measure. A good scripted show or movie has merit to be sure, but they are damn rare. Especially in television, where producers are anxious to fill up hours with something.

I like TV. It is entertainment from when I have finished the stuff I need to do. I like West Wing, Commander in Chief, Unit seems entertaining, 1 and 1/2 men, Out of Practice, NCIS, Crossing Jordan, Little Brittin on the BBC, Boston Legal. Then there is the Discovery channel, TLC, Military channel, Hist and Hist Intl. And Speed. I tend not to watch the news since it is mostly crap. I prefer to get my news on line from various sources. The only reality shows I will watch if they even are reality shows are American Chopper and Overhaulin. Love the Foose cars and the OC choppers are pretty cool.

It’s entertainment meant to divert the mind from reality. I Tivo the stuff and watch it on a rain day or when I just don’t feel like doing any thing productive.

I sometimes (often) wonder if I'm softening my mind by watching it and I've gone years in the past w/o the damn things, but oh man, it does streamline the dispersal of information.

Trick is, not to overdo it with useless info.

You talking about Nancy Grace?

I don't advocate violence against anybody, but.... If an anvil accidentally fell on her "Bugs Bunny" style I might not care all that much.

Discovery seems to have turned it around and come out of their Jesse James induced 24 hour chopper network cycle (No pun intended).

I like all of the new survival shows, I shouldn't be alive is great programming.

The one I really worry about is TLC. What is there to learn about obese people with 86 lb. tumors who have bad fashion sense?

When i watch TV the channels i scan through are history, Discovery, discovery health,Military,OLN. Mostly shows that have something of interest and redeeming value. I do not care for shows like the gameshow type ones. I enjoy watching AMerican chopper and monster garage because of the people in the show and they make some cool **** once in a while. Just TV is not really that good anymore.

The history and discovery channel can be pretty good. Discovery had a piece on a while back about a frozen man found in Europe or Asia from way back, 5 to 10 thousand years, I forget exactly, and it was amazing how much they were able to piece together about how intelligent and resourceful those people were. He had shoes with a soft inner liner for absorbing sweat -- he had some mushrooms with anti-biotic properties in a pouch -- I should try to watch it again. It's weird how as our collective skill and knowledge have grown, individual skills seem to be declining, cept for one or two specialties apiece.

Am. Chopper is interesting. The Daily Show is killer. Jon Stewart is a next plateau kind of guy, IMO.
