I eat lots of carbs, but I exercise a lot. I find that mixing my diet up in different ways really helps me with whatever I am doing. As an example, when backpacking or climbing, I eat tons of carbs for energy, and eat high fat foods like nuts before bedtime, as fats release their energy over a longer time period, helping to keep me warm in my bag. For a huge burst when you're bonking, try chocolate covered espresso beans. Caffeine and chocolate! BANG!
I totally avoid any "empty" foods like pop (soda to you Americans) that are calories without anything else. I also avoid hydrogenated fats and anything fried. I simply eat good food, lots of it, and pay attention to my caloric intake to make sure I don't eat too much, as well as eating enough. Whe having to eat fast food, your choices are REALLY limited, but if you want to be healthy, that's life. My daughter had a play-date at a local Burger King today, and I had a Veggie Burger sans-mayo (300cal) and an order of Chili (200cal) for a 500cal low fat lunch. Not the best lunch, but far from the worst. A decent amount of protein, low in calories and fat. Top it off with water or diet pop to drink, and it's not bad. The main problem with a "diet" is that it is a temporary solution to a permanent problem. People need to toss the stupid books away, forget about "being on a diet" and find a balance between activity and food. People will invest HUGE amounts of time in their careers and forget their physical selfs. What good is the big house and fat bank account if you're diabetic and/or dead? As to actually undertaking exercise, too many people try too much, too soon, get discouraged, and quit. I see it all the time. I call it "resolution rush" every January. The gym fills for the first 6-8 weeks of the year as everyone rushes to keep their resolution, and they're gone by April at the latest. In November, there is only a core group of us. Fit it into your schedule, and make it part of your life. You don't have to become a gym rat. Walk in your neighbourhood, skate in the winter, whatever. Try to find some reason to stay motivated. I climb with some of the fittest people in the country, and I HATE to be the weakest link. In the non-climbing seasons, it keeps me going. I don't want to be dragging down the group when it comes time to climb again.

I expected to see this when the novelty wore off......I never fell for the Atkins hoax. You didn't even have to be in the medical field to know this deep down.

I tried the Atkins but I quit for 2 reasons.
1-It made me sweat like a pig 2-I didn't like the strict regimen involved. Since passing 40 it's gotten a lot harder to lose the extra pounds. But in the past 3 weeks or so I have lost one notch on my belt. The secret? I cut out the sweets. Ice cream, cake, chips, etc.... I eat a sensible meal and work out almost every day. Not so hard to do. I don't ever feel hungry either. If I get hungry I take a slim-fastor protein shake. Or eat some high water content food like veggies or fruit. I'm notextremely overweigh, maybe 20 lbs or so But just the exercise makes me feel so much better. Danny

Here is a link to a forum where people discuss low carb diets.
http://forum.lowcarber.org/forumdisplay.php?f=98 There is another forum at that site to argue low carb diets. If you think you can back your position, I dare you to try. http://forum.lowcarber.org/forumdisplay.php?f=137 Ketoacidosis (Ketosis:edited for brain-fart) is not caused by low carb diets it is a condition mostly of diabetes. Check a Physiology book for a better explanation, I did. Check how profitable carbs are for the food and pharm industries and check their investments in these products and check who funds the research that says they are good for you. Don't be fooled, they want you on junkfood until they can get you on insulin, etc. Last edited by TwitchKitty; 03-19-2006 at 05:22 PM. |
