New News: It's Fats, Not Carbs (you idiots) :)

Eat less, lose weight. Eat more, gain weight. Exercise more, lose weight, sit on your ass, gain weight. Can it be simpler than that?

LAS VEGAS — Limiting fats rather than carbohydrates is better for keeping weight off, according to new research that could add fuel to the backlash against low-carb diets.

Regardless of how they shed pounds in the first place, dieters have been turning away from Atkins-style plans as a long-term weight-control strategy, and the new study gives them more reason: Low-fat plans seem to work better at keeping weight off.

“People who started eating more fat … regained the most weight over time,” said Suzanne Phelan, a Brown Medical School psychologist who presented results of the study Monday at a meeting of the North American Association for the Study of Obesity.

The study used the National Weight Control Registry, a decade-old effort to learn the secrets of success from people who had lost at least 30 pounds and kept them off for at least a year. Doctors from the University of Colorado in Denver, the University of Pittsburgh and Brown University in Providence, R.I., run the registry.

They studied 2,700 people who entered the registry from 1995 through 2003. Their average age was 47, most were women, and they had lost an average of 72 pounds initially. Doctors compared their diets to see whether one type or another made a difference in how much weight they had lost and how much they had regained a year later.

All reported eating only about 1,400 calories a day, but the portion that came from fat rose — from 24 percent in 1995 to more than 29 percent in 2003 — while the part from carbohydrates fell, from 56 percent to 49 percent.

The number who were on low-carb diets (less than 90 grams a day) rose from 6 percent to 17 percent during the same period.

The type of diet made no difference in how people lost weight initially. But those who increased their fat intake over a year regained the most weight.

Colette Heimowitz, a spokeswoman for the Atkins diet organization, noted that the study considered 90 grams to be low-carb, while Atkins recommends 60 grams for weight loss and 60 to 120 for weight maintenance. She said that for many of the dieters studied, “the carbs aren't low enough for them to be successful.”

Thomas Wadden, a University of Pennsylvania weight loss expert who had no role in the study, said it was too soon to say which approach was better.

I am expecting a huge increase in Coronary problems down the road thanks to the Atkins diet.

I wanted nothing to do with it. I have enough family history without begging for more problems.

A college buddy of mine did Atkins a while back. Now he's on prescription medication for high cholestorol. He's only 39.

My thinking is just to keep everything in moderation. Works well for me.

Heh; I got 20 missing pounds that say cutting carbs work. Cutting fat works as well, but the secret is that it's much more difficult to stick to a low-fat diet because you feel deprived. Low carb diets leave you feeling sated, so from that standpoint they're much easier to stick to.

I fully expect to have cholesterol problems shortly, though, as it runs on both sides of my family, regardless of obesity (or lack thereof). :P

If the diet is done properly, it's composed of whole, healthy foods -- a lot of vegetables, leafy greens, some meats, fruit in moderation, some berries and nuts -- and is a very sustainable way to eat indefinitely. Living on bacon, hamburger, pork rinds, and Atkins snack bars isn't 'doing Atkins' properly, and that's a problem for a lot of people. I have yet to be convinced by anyone that there is risk inherent in cutting out flour and most sugar from one's diet.

I suppose I can't speak from experience on the topic because I've always had a fast metabolism and have to "work" to keep the weight on.... at least for now.

My brother-in-law lost a bunch of weight on Atkins a few years ago also. Like others, the weight came back due to lack of daily exersise. He's my height, but weighs about 50 lgs more than I do at 210. He's pretty down about it, but long hours of work and a family aren't condusive to daily excersise. I'm single, so it's a lot easier to get to the gym daily.

I didn't think you were supposed to eat veggies and fruit (lot's of sugars) nor greens?

Lack of carbs leads to malnutrition..

My "fast" metabolism has caught up with me now that work and family obligations take up practically all of my time...my "spare tire" is living proof!

Turning 40 and getting a double hernia operation does nothing for enhancing your abs! :(

Narwhal, are you telling me my one point of anecdotal evidence hasn't convinced you to disregard the article completely? Well, heck ;)

You cut out fruit during 'induction' (the first couple of weeks), and slowly reintroduce it later on, because most fruits are carb-packed. But even in that strictest part of the program, you're supposed to eat a lot of vegetables and a fair amount of leafy greens. Vegetables vary a lot in terms of how many carbs they have, you might be surprised what you can eat and how much.

Drinking more water and getting more exercise will help in losing weight. Avoid fast food if possible. There's nothing wrong with carbs and starches in a diet, it's just too many carbs and starches with no exercise that result in weight gain.

It would seem like common sense, that fooling your body into thinking it needed to use fats for energy except in an emergency, might have some adverse consequences. Viagra might be useful to cocaine users, but give me a break – does anybody think there won’t be some big problems on down the line. How about plastic surgery – have you ever gone to lunch in Beverly Hills? Scary! So, was Barbara Eden cast as “Genie” because she looked like a fighter pilot babe, or do fighter pilot babes try to look like Barbara Eden?
Is a weaker dollar a good thing? If you give a tax cut and run record deficits are you really give giving a deferred tax increase? Is the secret to a strong economy more credit?
Let’s promote the idea for old people to go into debt – take a nice trip – and then go sit by the lake with a big bottle of sleeping pills.
