I just don't see that - Germany and France are more tightly allied now than they have ever been. They have a unified currency for chrissakes. You are simply engaging in a conservative's favorite pasttime- Cold War thinking. What is binding Russia and the EU together is fear of us. They know the only way to challenge us is to unite against us. What do your think the world will be like if Russia becomes a member of the European Union? There is nothing that says it can't.
For the Russians, the Ukranian situation is accenting their fear of us - they see us attempting to enter their sphere of influence in the Ukraine - its as if Russia decided to involve itself in Mexican or Canadian elections.
