uh-oh, forgot to call for jury duty!

will I be fined? I got a jury summons about two weeks ago. I filled out the form and then called the 800-number. I was then told to call back the following monday. when monday came around, I called and the automated voice said I am not needed and to call back tomorrow after 5pm. this went on for a couple more days until I completely put it aside and kinda forgot until about 5 days have passed and called the number just today. the automated voice saud I was supposed to show up at 8:30am on Dec. 3. so, am I in big trouble? this is my first time. I'm in southern california, btw.

The way they rattle off the numbers in those recordings it's a wonder more people don't miss their call to come in. I'm no legal expert but I imagine they'll just throw you back in the pool.

Typically, failure to appear for jury duty, without prior exemption, is contempt of court and a bench warrant can be issued, with bail determined by the judge.

nothing will happen, if you call and tell them to reassign a new day. for the past two years i have been "rescheduling" my jury duty every 2 months. I forgot to reschedule once, then i called two weeks later and they said "YOU MUST APPEAR THE NEXT TIME". So when the next summons came i just called and "rescheduled" again.
will

I think it varies from state to state. I've heard just lately that washington state is going to start clamping down on people that don't respond to jury summons. I guess till now they haven't done anythuing at all.

This kind of depends on the state you are in, tho. I know in New England you will be summoned to court and fined, while in Texas, you can throw the thing in the trash and you'll never hear about it again.

We like to "hang 'em high" in Texas...if you don't acknowledge a jury summons, plenty others will!

Actually, I was summoned twice but never responded, because they were sending them instead of calling...to an old address.

In Texas anyone arrested is guilty anyway, so who cares - one juror is as good as another. Let em go get 12 retired dudes to find them guilty so I can go to work. They'll do it just to give them something to do. Try em and fry em, thats the Texas way. We only give them a trial because the rest of the country makes us do it. It was so much simpler in the days when the choice was the oak tree or the chain gang. This innocent til guilty stuff is a pain. Why would we fine anyone who didn't want to do it? We don't even like doing it.

Just tell them you can spot a guilty man by looking him in the eye.................

And he must have been doing it if he was arrested.....................................

You won't spend much time sitting in the jury.
