Caught off guard
by my own design, and weather.
With my recent surgery and trip to California during the recuperation I never got my Blizzaks mounted on the 560. Ooops! Woke up this morning to a couple inches of snow, no biggie I thought as I went out for morning coffee. Wrong! My Yokohama H4's are virtually worthless in the current conditions. I did get my morning cup at the filling station but it wasn't a pleasant drive. Definitely two hand conditions, kinda tough when you've only got one. With the summer tires the car likes to pick its own path . Tomorrow morning I will be heading straight to the tire shop to have my winter tires mounted. Gotta do it ASAP as I have to drive 1/2 way across the State on Tuesday for my next Dr visit. As soon as I got home I brought my winter tires to the front door so I can start loading them into the 560. I guess I should have mounted them while it was still too warm. Oh well, live and learn.

i also got caught out in freezing rain with my summer tires still on (I was planning to put them on a week later). It was a crawl back home in 2nd gear (5spd manual) for 4kms, and very scary. I could spin the rear tires in 3rd gear, and the slightest touch of the brakes invoked the ABS.
on the other hand, this gives one a baseline for snow tire performance, and a better appreciation of where the money goes. |

I agree that this will give me a better appreciation of my winter tires. I mounted the Blizzaks as soon as I arrived last winter and never broke the drive wheels loose under normal driving and the ABS only engaged when stopping on solid ice. It will be nice to have a current comparison of summer v winter under sloppy conditions.

I had a SAAB that had the emergency/parking brakes on the front. On ice you could use the handle for braking, when you lock the fronts you don't fishtail or spin. I thought it was pretty clever of them to build it that way.

The last two winters I ran the Arctic Alpins on the TE, and in all honesty, I don't think they were worth a damn in any snow over an inch. Got a set of 4 Cooper winter diggers with studs this year. Wish it would snow now to try them out. I firmly believe in snows on all four corners.

The other upside to a mostly full tank of gas is it cuts down on the condensation inside the tank. In the winter of course that means less ice trying to move through the fuel system.
I used this idea with the W114 two winters ago (plus a couple bags of salt 80kg) and I had no real troubles running with some old all seasons. Mark |

Give me a call when your in town Mike I have a fairly slow week and won't have to be in such a rush like the last 5 times.
The weather is the nastiest I've seen in years 45 MPH wind blowing sleet...forget about it. I stepped out to go hunting this aftenoon and stepped right back inside and opened a Dark Horse Brew this is the first afternoon in months I choose to stay indoors. |
