December 23 in my shop.

My son has gotten carried away with getting his car painted before he goes back to college. He is installing side and hood scoops on his 65 Mustang as well as repairing all the dents and dings so he can bring it by Maaco for the paint job. In the picture is, from right to left, My son, His friend Mat and his other friend Cory who has a 67 Cougar. Here is a picture of my shop at this time.

The car is now at the paint shop. Getting a new paint job in GM Indigo Blue with smoke gray Lemans strips, At least the kid is happy, I'm not to happy about paying for it, but we did give it to him as a Bday present.
I'll post a picture when its done.

Looked at quite a few jobs and I liked what I saw. The shop has been there since 1986 owned by the same person. BBB has 2 complaints about the shop over the last 3 years. Both were corrected.
My son has a budget and this fits the bill. They now use Dupont paint. We're getting Dupont polyurethane with a clear coat sealer and Lemans stripes. Again the work I saw was fine. And the tech who was going to work on the car was exited about doing it.
Would it be the level of a Mercedes, probably not, but it will be fine and guaranteed for 4 years.

I'm always concerned when I see a flame source close to the ground because solvents are heaver than air. I'm assuming that since the painting was done somewhere else that no solvents were being used in your garage.

I use a "vent less" wall mounted natural gas garage heater which is mounted 4 ft. above the ground. Since hot air rises and my garage ceiling is almost 10 ft. high, I found it necessary to install a ceiling fan to circulate the warm air.

Yes I am very aware of this. The only sovent used in the garage at the time was Bondo. Those fumes just stink, not flamable. But we did produce lost of dust sanding, even with a vacuum pickup on the sander. So occasionaly we opened the garage doors to air it out.

Alway be aware of flames and solvents in a garage or shop.

Dave

PS noticed that you are from Ill. If I was up there I would have an entire forced air heat system. But down here in Texas I don't really use the heater that much. The unit was not used over the last 2 years. BUT I do have an AC that is used a lot during the summer.

A forced air heat system would be nice, but an ideal setup would be a radiant floor system. Laying on a cold concrete floor makes you feel 20 degrees colder.

Looking forward to seeing pictures of your son's project!

Ahh yes the debate.

North of the Mason-Dixon line = radiant floor heat

South of the Mason-Dixon line = Central Air Conditioning/Heat.

I was laying on the floor working on my sons car and it was not bad. A little cold but either carpet, carpet pad or the roll around makes it OK.
Now sweating in the summer, that another story. I can put on a sweatshirt in the cold, but working on your shorts and still sweating, it sucks.
I do understand the northern idea, I grew up in New York and had to work on the cars in the winter on a cold garage floor.

BUT refer to the rule above.

Dave

PS I found this same idea in all my wood working magazines. Butthe majority of the magazines were published up north. I only found one article in 10 years of subscriptions talk about AC but it was only discussed due to a forced air system being installed.

Another observation:

North of the Mason Dixon line = I rather sweat than freeze to death.

South of the Mason Dixon line = I rather freeze than sweat to death.

I can also put a sweatshirt on in the cold but I can't work on a car with gloves on. Working in shorts and still sweating beats thawing your frozen fingers under cold tap water. The "cold" tap water is not a typo, there is something about cold water that thaws better than warm or hot water and not leave that frost bite sting.

With the 20 degree temperatures up here I am partial to warm weather at the moment.

Nice I always loved the original Mustangs. My Uncle has had a red 67 Fastback since the early 80's. It is one sick car now with a full Shelby (sp?) suspension, roll cage, bucket seats. He also has a 302 stroker in it, and has it backed by a 5spd. I think Bear disc's all the way around. It flies and sounds so sweet. It has been his project car for the last dozen years.
