I think some Europeans had a liking for these 3 wheeled oddities because at one time they could be driven with a motorcycle license as opposed to an automobile license and were taxed as motorcyles.
Can anyone think of other reasons for 3 wheels as opposed to 4 apart from the savings in tires?

Almost the same thing as the British Reliant. Our learned confrere Kerry Edwards has once again hit the nail on the proverbial head.
Vehicle size, class {motorcycle} and taxable HP being of great concern in Europe.

That is definately a Reliant Robin (3 pin plug or plastic pigs as they're known in the UK)didn't know we exported them over to you too.The plus side for these vehicles are they have a fibreglass body so they didn't rust.Driving at anything over 70mph is scary as they start to weave across the road

I filled in our DF friend Mark DiSilvestro about Mr. Dauphine on a previous thread but here goes.
This Renault Dauphine was custom converted in 1962 for famed violinist Jascha Heifetz who was an early "green". There were a few other companies who specialized in limited production Dauphine conversions such as the Henney Kilowatt. This particular car is a one off with a gorgeous walnut dash with black aircraft gages,Triumph TR2 steering wheel and Alfa Duetto seats.Silverplate plaque on the dash says"custom crafted for Jascha Heifetz by Tork-Link electric apparatus co." What's really cool is the mechanics of it. It is powered by a '20's vintage Rauch and Lang field weakened squirrel cage motor pushed to 96 volts, this vintage motor is coupled to the Renault transaxle and controlled by a smaller, more precise version of a 1920's eletric car switchbox, when you depress the accelerator you simply connect up to 6 separate field windings with or without certain resistors thus "weakening the fields". 42mph level is the top speed and I usually plug in the on board charger every 35 miles or when the ammeter tells me it's time. I did travel 50 miles before I ran out of juice but I don't push it and restrict traveling to local grocery store, hardware and post office runs. One of these days I'll have a windcharger and photovoltaic array to charge it.
