WARNING! PNY Memory

OK, bought a 512 stick of PNY memory from CrapUSA just after t-giving and sent my rebate ($30 worth) in along with the UPC cut from the paper sandwiched in between the plastic (I left it loose in the envelope since I've had rebates "denied" before by others because I had stapled the UPC to the other paperwork.)

Got a card in the mail stating that they could not honor my request for a rebate due to the following reason(s):

"Missing original UPC" and "Missing: UPC"

Then they say "To resubmit for this offer you must return this card (received today, the 6th) and any validating information to the address shown above by: 01/19/2005"

So I have no UPC now since it's probably on their floor and since they wanted the original receipt, they won't accept the copy I have so it just appears to be a scam to me that they can come up with any excuse (like "we never received it in the first place") to deny people their rebate.

Any one else get scammed by these thieves??? Am looking for ways to cost these worthless POS's more, MUCH more than the $30 they have now stolen from me. I wouldn't have bought the memory from CrapUSA in the first place for the $30 more that it has now cost me, could've bought on ebay for less.

So, buyers beware, you MUST add the $30 to the actual price of their memory if you buy this PNY crap as you will NEVER get your rebate from these POS's.

Maxtor on the other hand, has always honored their rebates for me and very quickly, so it's not everyone, just these pricks so far.

BTW, am going to post this on every forum I can possibly think of, maybe enough will avoid their memory "on sale" and cost them sales.

I tape alll of the required pieces to a sheet of 8.5 X 11 paper. I also make a copy of the stuff so that I don't have a problem with fulfilment. Go to COMPUSA and complain... loudly if necessary. The fulfliment people are just contractors.

I have the same problem. Bought one from them because they said there is a $20 rebate.

They have the most unethical business practice!!!

Best of luck getting the rebate ironed out. D-Link did a similar thing to me, sending a postcard many months after my submission which stated that I wasn't inside the rebate period. That was about 4 years ago, and I've purchased numerous network cards, hubs and switches since then -- but _none_ from D-Link. Other companies (Sprint and Memorex, for example) have always been good to me. I sort of vote with my wallet.

For future reference....
What could go if you slipped the UPC inside of a clear plastic envelope, and stapled the envelope to a cover sheet. Photocopy the whole thing.

I have to regularly perform leak tests on several pieces of radioactive equipment and this is the way we send the test strips.

I don't bother with rebate incentives unless the amount of money is sizeable...like car rebates!

If I want the product, the rebate isn't going to matter much.

And yeah, I DO send the rebate stuff in most of the time...ironically, not for the PNY USB drive (bought the 128MB last year)...

Guys,
I called PNY Technologies in NJ and talked with this Mike guy, who is in charge of customer relations. I told him what a crap company that he works for and that I am reporting them to BBB. The phone number to their HQ is 973-515-9700 and ask for Mike in customer relations. I suggest you guys give him a call as well, if nothing else, blow the $20 rebate on their phone bills. See how much they make off cheating people out of $20.

I will never buy a damn thing from PNY again.

I hate rebates too

Most suggestions have already been offered here (make copies of everything, go to the store and complain, go to the local BBB and complain, etc.).

If all of the above fails, go to your state Attorney General office and ask for their consumer protection division. Every AG's office, and most local District Attorney offices, have a consumer protection division. Ask them to investigate. If this is a custom and practice by PNY, then they probably have a file on it and they will go after them.

Also, try writing to MAXIMUM PC magazine (it is a kick ass computer magazine). They have a consumer protection advocate (the "WATCH DOG"). Ask him/them to look into it. Usually a call from the "DOG" is enough to get the problem resolved. (If you have never seen MAXIMUM PC magazine, go to to any bookstore and they should carry it).

Good luck and let us know how it went.

Hey, great point. You reminded me, this worked in '93 with an Expotech computer I bought that had a power supply blowout after 2 months. Calls to the company only got me "we don't have that part right now, you'll have to wait" so I wrote a letter to PC Magazine, the place where I saw the ad to begin with. The mag replied, stating that they had contacted the company and a new power supply arrived shortly after that.

I just got a 512 SD card from PQI, and am waiting for a 20 dollar rebate... there's 2 UPC's, one on the paper inside the plastic, and one on the outside plastic. Like every rebate, I take a photocopy before I send it out... we'll see what happens with this one.

PS: The only rebate problem I have had was one that came 3 months late... never missed out on one
