Poor bastards in Raleigh

I laughed my fool ass off today. There was a short story in the paper about the 1" of snowfall there. Apparently the mayor was pissed because the meteorologist called for just a dusting. Everything came to a standstill. There were 3,000 kids stranded at the schools overnight. WTF.

Come live in my neck of the woods for a winter. I bet some of you have it even worse than I.

hahahahaha, i was there last winter for a snow event... pretty funny.. the day before the snow showed up they closed everything... except the bars... no body was driving, working, nothing... it was an emergency too with 2" of white stuff. two days later it was in the high 70s and the snow was gone as fast as it arrived...

i surely don't get the kids in school over night. i'd be pissed...

There's one big difference. You have snowplows & salting trucks. Also, people expect the snow and have snow tires or at least all season tires. I've lived in Raleigh as well as Wisconsin and western Mass.
1" of snow can be tough when you have no equipment to handle it!

Blizzaed in NC in 2000

I just moved to NC in January of 2000 when they got hit with a 2 fott blizard. I was in a hotel 40 miles from where I was living because of business and I decided i wasn't going to be sitting in a hotel all day. I drove back to my friends and we hung out. We went to the grocery store and you have thought a tornado came through. People parked everywhere, food everywhere on the floors. We waited in line for about 30 minutes to check out. Some areas cancelled school for 10 days. 10 days! I bet buffalo would have had a delayed opening. I kwow it's different down there but still.

I learned to drive in Chicago in the 60's. No front wheel drive, no snow tires, but the City's street are straight, and the topography is flat. Plus they are accustomed to lots of snow each winter (however it seems even Chicago is having trouble today) and the equipment is available to deal with it. I've lived in Fairfax VA (metro Wash DC) for the last 18 years and what a difference. The topo is not flat, the roads are not straight. Many people have a very difficult time even with front wheel drive or 4 wheel drive. Since I've lived here, kids have been forced to stay at school and parents had to get to them as best they could because the buses couldn't move. Fairfax County now cancels school if snow is in the forcast. Just too many risks. It is easy to laugh when you don't have to leave work and drive to school 25 miles in snow in rush hour traffic, it can take 6 hours.

regards,

Mark

Driving around the DC metro area in the snow today was a blast! 'Course I have good snow tires on my car.

I think the funniest sites were of overconfident truck and SUV drivers spinning wheels and fish-tailing all over the place. 4 wheel drive doesn't gaurantee no slippage!!

Sure it does. Just ask the genuises who paid $35K for them. That's what they bought them for. So that they can go 65 mph or above in all weather conditions.

I like the look of an SUV in the winter.........................on it's roof.

Saw an Excursion and an Escalade {think excrement} on the Northern State pkwy, crash. The Excursion foolishly accelerated after traffic began moving and wound up careening into the divider, saw sparks, what fun.......

The Escalade, another Bloated chariot of entitlement, was on it's side by the entrance to 135.

Well, consider the master plan of those who look with amused condescention upon the doings of us mortals, who would conceive of these SUV's ferrying their socially insecure cargo to their over priced and under built McMansions to wallow in an oddly displaced sense of security and well-being. The thought of their heating costs is enough to rend my vitals.......not to mention their credit card bills.

Christ, gimme a woodstove and a 5th of gin!!!!!

Over the years I've developed an affinity for Johnny Walker Black, straight up, naturally. Unfortunately, of late, my stomach has another divergent opinion.
