Pics of my VIP Style W126

Hi everyone,

Here's some pics of my ride (1983 W126 280SEL) that has gone through quite a fair bit of modification from its stock standard state back in 2000 when I bought this car.

Just to share with everyone here as I am contemplating sending the car to the scrapyard soon. Our laws here do not allow us to keep our vehicles indefinitely, and recent work commitments overseas do not permit me to spend time even driving my beloved car.

I posted this thread here in Open forum unless I get some idea that it can be exported to anyone interested in taking over my JP W126. Till then, hope u like these pics...

Cheers

OK, maybe it's because I grew up in Miami in the 80's, but I like me a big body benz with a body kit. Nice car.

My neck has a hard time bending diagonal. Do you have any shots of the car that are parallel with the road?

You must be a mafioso in Singapore with that thing.

Ever feel out of place with it? It seems rather large for that area of the world. I thought that most of their cars were smaller, hence mafioso.

Thanks

Hi Plantman,

I am no mafioso (don't mind being one though, heh..), but I just like em big, black (and bad). And I quite enjoy being out of place too, esp here in Singaopore. One thing for sure, this car has got all the ingredients to be booked for several tickets by the cops, but bless me, so far I am still clean.

Its a tiny island here, and the mindset of the authorities towards car dressup is even tinier! And yea, most cars are smaller here, although there are the standard BMW 7 series and Merc S Class types....

Nice! I normally don't care for body kits, but that is a good-looking car!

I'm curious: What are the local laws that don't allow you to keep the car "indefinitely"? Are they emissions-related laws, safety regulations, or what?....

If you can't keep it yourself, then I hope you can find a new home for it. Don't send it to the crusher!

Mike

How much $$ did this restoration cost? Engine still stock six? Seems like you could have bought a stock Ferrari for as much and had a faster more beautiful ride. I guess beauty is in the eyes of the beholder...

Curious about your wheel/tire package. I usually don't find anything that looks good on an MB besides OEM or AMG, but your setup looks awesome!!

Looking for a W126 for my daughter, and that is a great wheel/tire combo for a car like that!

Mikemover,
It's more of a regulation to control the vehicle population on the roads to prevent overcongestion on our tiny island. All vehicle owners are required to purchase COE (Certificate of Entitlement) which will then permit us to buy a vehicle. This certificate comes in 5 and 10 yr validity periods, after which it can be renewed up to a 30yr max or the car can be reregistered/scrapped, whichever is earlier. Once past 30yrs, the vehicle needs to be registered as "Classic" and therefore is restricted to the roads to about 20 days a year. I know this sounds incredile, but it is true!

Its also partly emission control but I don't see why a properly maintained older vehicle can be any more harmful to the enviroment than a new but poorly maintained one.

I hate to send it to the crushers too, sigh...

az420sel,
Engine still stock 6. It did cost quite a bit, but I did it out of passion more than economic sense. And guess what, our Ferraris here cost all 4 limbs!

G-Benz, w126,
I used lowering springs and KONI shocks all round, thus the ride is harsher but very much firmly planted on the ground even during fast cornering. Pick up is albeit affected as I run 18x8.5J (225/35/R18) and 18x11J (265/30/R18), but hey, our roads here are short and dotted with lights at every hundreds of metres, so it's still alrite. Not a car to outrun anyone, but great for cruising.

I worked in S'pore for 11 years from the mid 70's. Do you still have the ARF and PARF system of purchasing cars? I remember the car prices were rather high even back then. The last car I had in S'pore was a 1985 Honda Prelude, great handling car. I upgraded the tires and wheels and it looked really sharp. Some bastard key the car across the hood(bonnet) about a month after I bought You should have seen my face when I saw the big scratch, over a foot long! Bought it new back then for about S$53K. When I left two years later, I sold it for 52K Although there were some restrictions in S'pore, but we really enjoyed living in there.
