Ford finally gets it?

www.americancarfans.com (click on Ford Fusion)

I think this may be the first domestic (non-classic) car that interests me. Good styling, a real interior that at least looks to be high quality, and a MANUAL transmission?

It's based on the Mazda 6 so quality should be Japanese reliable.

30+ mpg in a stick shift, American built, euro-styled sedan with (well, potential) Japanese dependibility? I like that recipe.

Thoughts?

*(and please don't bore with stories of a '91 Taurus you owned that was a piece of junk, or whatever previous Ford experiences.)

Well from the pic it looks sharp.... looks like an evolution of the European Ford Mondeo. I have always found the later European model Fords more attractive than the Fords offered here- fresher crisper styling, much more attractive than the blobby taurus' we have here.... maybe the Fusion will mark the beginning of a new era in Fords US market styling dept.

Nate,

Ever seen the Australian Ford Falcon?

Turbo Inline Six, manual transmission, and REAR WHEEL DRIVE. Makes me want to cry for a few different reasons.

-Agreed, the doors are virtually the same as the current gen ford mondeo. The Mazda6 that it is based on reminds me of a Peugeot 406.

YES!!!! I will agree the Aussie Falcon is a HOT car......

I also like the Opels and Vauxhalls... wish their american counterparts were more like them!

It was interesting to see Pontiac bring the Holden Commodore over as a GTO.....

Wish the american manufactureres would do more of that.

Cant wait for Renaults return to the US as Nissans......

Come to think of it, ALOT of Opels genes are coming through in the new Saab 9-3, ever since the merge betwen GM and Saab, the Saabs have become more like Opels in disguise...

I actually REALLY like the Saab 9-5 Aero... think it is one of the more beautiful new cars avail.... sharp, uber-modern, unique, yet retaining a very distinctive Saab look. I think that was lost in the exterior of the new 9-3, but its still a nice looking car.

And I just remembered the Cadillac Catera... I really liked the later variants of that car offered here.... when it gained the larger wheels, and revised bumpers.... I thought it was a VERY sharp car. Probably would have done better badged as somthing other than a Caddy. It was basically a re-badged Opel/Vauxhall. In europe it was also offered in a wagon variant.

Nice car! It looks simular to the new Ford 500.

I still think Ford would do well by putting a DIESEL engine in the F-150

You forgot one thing. Fords are........ FORDS! These are the same people that brought you - EXPLORER roll over deaths and Crown Victoria's exploding and cooking people to death, and then tried to downplay, cover-up, and lie about it, to the point of falsifying crash test results. If you investigate, Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury have about twice the recalls on their products. These cars and trucks are badly designed to the point of being dangerous. Maybe these images of a Phoenix Police officer that barely lived through his Crown Victoria explosion will stick in your mind. http://www.officerjason.com/gallery/index.html

Ford are FORDS? NO WAY!

Yes Arizona, we all know the stories. My favorite is when they planted coke in J.D.'s pad. That was Ford, right?

But you see, the car I want to discuss HAS NOT BEEN BUILT YET.

I think the may get it right with this car.

They have botched things for so long...

That is why I titled the post...

"Ford finally gets it"

Mike

PS- I mentioned in the initial post that I didn't wnat to hear about past Fords.

Well... GO GET IT!! Any Ford is a bad investment. With all the GOOD carmakers on the market, WHY would you want one. Good Luck, and be sure to put me as your insurance beneficiary.

Tell you what -- I'll put a $25K Ford Escape against an ML any day, any way. Also, if you ever happen to find A Ford GT in your garage, please don't throw it away -- I'll gladly take the heinous vehicle off your hands at no charge!
