Anybody use Nextalarm?
I'm pretty fed up with paying ADT $28+ per month to monitor a system that was paid for a long time ago. So a quick web search turns up www.nextalarm.com who will do it for as low as $8.95 a month. Plus there are a bunch of added features accessible via the web. Does anybody have experience with this company?

Interesting Rick - the price is more in line with the discount you get with homeowners (hazard) insurance. Allstate give me $96 a year to have monitoring.

Next Alarm
I went thru the process of registering my current alarm panel with them in early Sept 05. and purchased a ABN adaptor of ~$120 w/shipping. They claimed my panel could be monitored no problem.
After very slow responses & delays thy could not get it to work. You can only email them & I think they are selective on who they get back with. I did talk to couple of techs, but nothing materialize. They claimed they had to reprogram my alarm to ContactID messages which was attempted. Of coursed it has not worked with my old monitoring company since the first time they messed with it so I have been w/o monitoring since mid Sept. Now they do not respond to my work tickets, so I am paying my old alarm monitoring company to reprogram the panel to work with them again. I called the Home Security Store, the nextalarm partner that sells all the equipment for a return. They said they will not take back the ABN Adaptor because it was outside the 30 day return window. I called next alarm customer service w/ no answer, just VM that they do not return. Feels like a scam to me. My advice would be to stay far away! No body needs the hassle! |

I know several people using Nextalarm; all are quite satisfied.
I'm in the process of switching my Monitronics system over the Nextalarm. The alarm hasn't been cooperating particularly well. I could definately be more aggressive in getting it done. Nextalarm has always responded to my calls and service tickets within a few hours - no complaints there. Try calling your current provider and demanding a better rate. When I contacted Monitronics to cancel, they offered to drop my rate $29 -> $12 / month (with a three year contact). Quite a drop. I declined because Nextalarm is $8.95. Should note the _only_ thing I care about is the insurance discount. Burgler alarms, are, IMHO worse than completely useless. The false alarm rate is greater than 99%. Can you think of anything else you'd put up with that worked so poorly? - JimY |

Somebody - sorry you had trouble with them, but I'm not surprised. I did go ahead and make the switch several months ago. They've been generally ok, as long as I don't need any customer service. But I did have an event a few weeks ago where I wanted to call them and couldn't find a phone number. So I sent an email that went unanswered.
During the setup process I talked on the phone to a VERY knowledgeable technician who told me that my alarm system was coded to use a very old standard that they didn't directly support. The system is reprogrammable, but the original installer had locked it up with a password that they didn't give me. So Nextalarm sent out an external converter box at no extra charge. The tech also hinted to me on the phone that my system could be unlocked and reprogrammed with the assistance of some articles on the web. I found those articles and got it unlocked, but never got around to switching the communication standard because it works fine with the external box. Oh, and btw, ADT still calls or sends a letter about every other month trying to win me back. Not gonna happen.
