Would you intentionally expose your child to chickenpox?

Came across this here:

I have no idea what age a child can get the vaccine since we don't inject toxins into Patricia, but the chiken pox virus can be gotten at any age. We are planning a chicken pox party when we find a child who has been exposed. I would much rather her have permanent immunity.

I can't help but think that can't be good. Exposing your child to chickenpox so they won't get it later?

Once upon a time it may have made sense, because it was widespread and you really don't want to get it as a teenager or an adult -- it is more severe after puberty.

However, now, it's more unusual for kids to get it because of the vaccinations. I've never had chickenpox and certainly wouldn't expose a child to it intentionally, but in years past, maybe.

Same principle as vaccinations except they feel that it is injecting a toxin which is worse than inhaling that same toxin.

If you send an unvaccinated kid to school, that is essentially what you are doing.

But schools won't enroll your kid unless he/she has been vaccinated...this includes the chickenpox vaccination.

My daughter seemed to get some wierder viruses than chickenpox immediately after her vaccination...but nothing since then.

What benzene said -- chances aren't great that chicken pox will be contracted at all. As a child I recall parents exposing their children to chicken pox and measles, but only in households with more than one child after one child had contracted the disease.

Any chance that you're confusing mumps with chickenpox?

Even so, I think cases of sterility caused by mumps are considered rare. Something to be avoided, certainly. For just this reason, I received a mumps vaccination because I hadn't gotten the disease during childhood.

I had chickenpox as a kid. I almost got a girl pregnant except for that she miscarried.

You might be right about that......all I know is I had all of those as a kid...

including missing 2 weeks of school with german measles in the 4th grade ......just weeks before they started vaccinating kids for it.

If you almost, but didn't quite, get a girl pregnant... what exactly did she miscarry?

Never mind, I don't want to know. Although I'm dying to post an image of Bat Boy.

There's a great South Park episode

If you ever catch it. ...

The kids of South Park are exposed to Chicken Pox via the parents via a chicken pox party for the same reason. The kids find out about the "harm" intended by their parents to intentionally give their own children a virus. So, to exact revenge, they hire a local whore who has all sorts of nasty stuff living inside her to use the parents' tooth brushes and other repulsive contact transmission methods.
It's pretty funny. If you have Tivo and do a keyword on 'south park chicken pox', you'll only get that episode when it eventually comes on without having to wade through the other episodes.
