What Should I Buy - New Sedan

I'm going to buy a new sedan this year as a replacement for my 400E that has been just about the best car we have owned. The car is going to be driven primarily by my wife but will be used for family trips. I am willing to spend up to 60K for the car. My wife's other car is a SLK32 AMG. Car needs to be as lively as the 400E is and get good fuel mileage. Here are my leading possibilities. Comments anyone?

Infiniti M45 (2006)
E350 (2006)
LS430
E500

BMW cars are out as they have no aesthetic appeal to us. Don't like looks of Cadillac either.

Other new model to consider are the Acura RL and Audi A6. The Lexus may feel a little soft, but you'll have to decide that on a test drive.

Those all sound like good candidates, but I'm always wary of 1st-year cars and engines, which would include the M45, E350, A6 and RL.

E320 CDI, or an E350. $60k will get you a very slightly used S500.

Infiniti M45 looks awesome...but the LS430 is the King of the road in my book!

I would check out the new A6. German magazine, Autobild picked it as car of the year.

Checking out A6 should be easy. Local dealer sells Audi, BMW, Mercedes, and Porsche.

Thanks for all the opinions. The dealer that sells Mercedes also sells Audi. Will check out A6.

I've driven the 320CDI; impressive engine.

e350 with appearance and premium packages. AIRMatic DC is worth every penny. superior to any standard spring/shock suspension.

i would never own an audi out of warranty. they look cool, but no substance. look at the leather seats in a used audi, ripped and tattered. its indicative of the rest of the car.

Well if your looking for a NEW car then go with the E320 CDI. What a car, it has an engine like no other. No Clattering engine like the older MB Diesels, I must add though I like the sound of the old Clattering. Its fuel milege is up around 35 mpg. Has as much or more torque than an MB Gasoline engine. Only drawback maybe that it hasn't been out here in the U.S for long, but the track record in Europe seems to be fine. If I were going to get a New MB with a Gasoline Engine then the E320 is the best way to go unless you want more room, then i'd suggest the S430 or S500, more expesive top of the line automobile.

I will agree with schwarzwagen-

I wouldnt want to have an Audi parked in my garage without a warranty! With that said, Id gladly drive an A6 until the warranty expired. While they arent engineered to last, they are drop dead gorgeous! They are a nice drivers car as well. Spirited, nimble, and rather fast with the right engine.

In addition to reccomendations for the Audi A6, and Mercedes E320 CDI, I will suggest a Volvo S60R. Not sure if its the size or style you want, but its probably the sexiest car in my eyes of 2005. Clean, agressive, elegant, rock solid, and FAST.

The Volvo S60R is my number 1 suggestion!

Happy Motoring!

If you look at the Audis, be wary of how expensive their parts are. They're as expensive as Mercedes and BMW.

Growing up in Germany in the 70's Audi's were crap cars. Handled well but fragile and not durable. Still can't get my head around them being considered luxury cars now. Times change.

I agree. I don't think it would be a good idea to own any newer German car that's out of warranty. I think both the Merc and Audi come with a 4 year/50K.
