Question Safe high yield investments?

Do any of you have good recommendations for safe low risk investments that have high yield? My local bank is giving 4% on money market funds with $10k or more invested. That seems pretty good for a very liquid investment.

I was listening to Ben Stein hawk his new book and he is saying that 8% should be easy to get with low risk by investing in REITS, emerging market debt, preferred stocks, bonds, etc. It sounded pretty interesting but mainly focused on older people with fixed incomes.

Citi bank preferred stock,c/pv, has a yield of 7.125%. The stock hardly goes up or down even when the Dow has a big drop or increase. It fluxutes less than a dollar for the past several year. It usually trades about $26. Check it out.

Real Estate Investment Trust - REITS maybe if you qualify for the lower federal long-term capital gain tax rates. A majority of REIT distributions will not qualify for the lower tax rates. Since REITs generally get most of their income from real estate investments rather than corporate dividends REIT distributions will usually not be classified as qualified dividend income.

You are from GA what is wrong with the good old "Bank of Coke" ? Three year returns are +12%.

The yield on Coke is only 2.56%. I'm not looking for capital gains.

Safest listed first, spec increases as you go down trhe page:

Dodge and Cox International fund. This year 32.5% on the international fund, avg of 13% over the years. Consistently ranks in money mags in the top 10 best managed funds.

www.Dodgeandcox.com

USU stock - currently 3.25% annual yield on quarterly dividends, not counting growth potential of stock - largest supplier of nuclear fuel in the USA, and agent for the government in converting russian A-bombs to diluted reactor fuel for use around the world in N plants.

TLK stock - Indonesia's largest fixed and cellular phone company, sold as an ADR on the New York Stock Exchange - i1 ADR represents 40 shares of Indonesian Telkom stock - only 8% of the country has any phone service, and cell usage has been growing 25-40% per year. Their new 'flexi' phone is a wireless home phone you can carry anywhere in the city, using old CDMA technology, aimed at people who can't afford a wired phone and dont need the even more expensive cell phone services. 3.85% annual yield on dividend.

ATML stock - diverse manufacturer of specialty chips in just about every market you can think of. Currently way down from it's average price, and its high earlier this year.

Closed end funds? Capital Protected High Yield Low Volatility Investment are good choices but you have a subscription period that may limit your liquidity.

Sidebar on Coke - I rounded my ICO #'s on coke to 4% year x 3years (12)

I'm showing C-PV has a yield of 6.85%. That's not too bad. Price has been between 22.5 and 27.3 over the past 52 weeks.

wrech in the works

What are you guys calling "low risk?" None of the items are in that category, according to traditional terminology...

Granted, what is 'low-risk' to one may not be so for others.... but preferreds in a rising rate market have significant risk of reduced principle (some may not remember back to the mid 90's when preferreds and closed end funds were getting whipped long and slow over a 5 year span)... someone was always looking for high yield with low risk, especially pre- or 'just at-' retirees.

Funds will spread out risk, but 2000-2003 showed that a down market takes everyone with it, regardless of diversification. Not low-risk....

Yes, time will/ should heal all wounds.... how much time have you got?

All items mentioned are lower risk than Oracle at a P/E of 160, but other than CD's, some bonds, and money markets, 'risk' is a major factor in all arenas...

Now, I own all the items mentioned above, so I'm not ignoring their benefits, but calling them low-risk could put a financial professional in the clink.... which, of course, is different from a discussion board of free advice, I understand.

Let's be careful out there...

Understand that these high yield stocks will trade as bonds and decline if rates ever really go up. When the bonds fall through major support as they did yesterdaay this stuff gets hammered. REIT’s are fine in your IRA, but consider the types of real estate they make their money in. I favor trailer parks (lots of cash flow) and old folks homes – such as UMH and HCN or HCP, Dodge and Cox has been great and maybe the best reason to own it is that they may close it to new investors as they did Balanced last year – they are a class act – also check out the FPA family – Cresent is no-load and is positioned well for the energy play and is holding about 50% cash – which should tell you something. For yield and the dollar combo look at Telecom Corporation of New Zealand Ltd (NZT) – for yield and materials combo look at Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (RIO) – but these are traders - for yield and hold em forever BP, FPL, CVX, CWT
