Toyota Camry brake pedal goes to floor
I recently purchased a 2002 Camry for my Wife and discovered that the brake pedal goes almost down to the floor when I step on the brake. The car stops just fine but the pedal just keeps on going down. The dealer has had it in a number of times now and the insist there is nothing wrong but are unable or unwilling to explain to me why the brakes are so different than what I am used to. I have a rather solid knowledge of how a basic power brake system works, the car does not have anti lock brakes and so I am left wondering what causes the excessive pedal travel? Does anyone know what is different with the Camry brake system that causes the brake pedal to continue moving after the brakes are applied?

The dealer is an idiot. This is almost certainly a master cylinder problem, and the seal is probably bad for the rear brakes, which is why you "seem" to stop fine.

sounds to me like the master cylinder too. check your fluid level and then carefully check around the master itself... if there are any signs of fluid then it is shot for sure.. if you hear a gurgling sound then it's also shot... also check all for brakes for leaks and worn parts...

Camray brakes
Wow! Thanks for the speedy replies. It appears maybe I'm not as ignorant as my dealer implies. A leaking master cylinder certainly seems like the most likely culprit. However the dealership has tried to convince me that there is some new Toyota technology involved that uses the power booster to limit the pressure that can be applied by the brake pedal. It sounds to me like they are using some distorted interpertation of antilock brakes. But since I can't find current tech info on Camry brakes I thought someone out ther might know if indeed there is something new.

find a Camry forum, or at least a Toyota one, that should get you some more specific info if this technology is in fact there...

I thought the LE the SE and the XLE all came standard with ABS (antilock brakes)

It's really amazing what some dealers will do to avoid providing proper service to a vehicle.
Tell this moron to take you out for a test drive in another 2002 Camry and prove to you that the Camry inherently has this sinking pedal as proper function. He won't be able to do that. I guarantee it. |
I hope you got all that in writing....becasue when your brakes fail and thee is an accident you will need it to sue their pants off.
