tire shopping has me frusterated

You'd think an acura integra would be a common enough car for them to make a cheap set of tires for, but apparently the size of 195/55/15 only has high performance tires made for it. The last set of tires i bought for the thing only lasted 20k miles, and while granted i dont baby the car, i dont race it everywhere either. So this time, the cheapest tires i've found are 65 each(this is after calling 15 plus places, and these had to be shipped in), and are the dunlop SP FM901's, or something to that effect. However, the treadwear rating is suppsoed to only be something like 200, so i'll probably need new tires again in 15-20k. Even with a ****ty alignment my benz made its toyo's last 20 k, and thats with the wheel pulling crazy hard! Ahh this has me irritated, i thought i bought an economy car!!! The real kicker of it is, the tires that fit the car waaaaay outperform the car, there is no need for it to have that sticky of rubber on it, i'd be happy with a decent set of good all season tires, and here i am stuck with high performance summer tires. Anyone else had a car like this that the tire requirements way outperform the intent of the vehicle??? I love the way the 15" gs-r rims look on it, but i'm about to trade for a set of 14" steelies just to get cheaper/longer lasting tires!

tried that, all of the tires they list are high performance oriented tires, the cheapest being 60 bucks, which is the same tire i'm getting for 65 at goodyear. I just dont understand why a typical all season tire isn't made in this size, its a fairly common car.....

Doing a fast Tirerack search I found 4 very nice tires on the first page:
Yokohama AVS ES100 Tread wear 280 (I will get these the next time around for my SDL they are sweet tires) $61

All 4 were under $70 each and had a treadwear rating of between 280-440.

My friends sister has a 2000 Integra; she doesn't like spending money on the car and just bought a new set of tires for it. She has the nicer wheels on it also. She got them from Town Fair Tire, I think they are Pirelli's.

My brother is in that same boat, with a real high performance Nissan Sentra . I suggested looking into 195/60-15's. I have an extra set that has some tread left I can give him to try.

Falken Azenis Sports........Cheap and top rated in traction..........If I wasn't selling my Honda I would be putting those on it now. (I am running 15" Integra GSR "Hammer" rims)

falken azenis would be my number one choice if i didn't ever have to drive in the rain, and wanted my tires to last more than 10k. Your absolutely right though, that is one of the grippiest best bang for buck street/racing tire that you can buy, but driving in the wet is supposedly very hairy in those. Hatterasguy: I saw those on tirerack also, but due to time constraints i dont have time to have tires shipped/then mounted, i need a local place to have them in stock and to be able to mount them the same day. Also, i dont see that big of a differance between the dunlop FM901 and those yokohma's to warrant spending the extra time to have them shipped, and 6 dollars more a tire is more than worth the convenience to me. May mine greif is that locally it was very time consuming and frusterating to find a tire for under 110 dollars, i had to haggle with the guys about these dunlops. Reason time is an issue is i'm going to be driving the state of florida(more or less) over spring break, and i did not want to do it on bald front tires, spring break starts next week...

If Yokohama Parada Spec 2 tires came in a 15" I would recomend those on a light chassis car......they are the best tires in the rain I have ever used....I have those on my Saturn...16" on custom rims.....great traction.

initial thoughts of the dunlop fm901 are good, the sidewall seems to be stiffer than my maxxis ma551's, and thus the car feels tighter on the road. Road noise is up there, but its nothing unbearable. The tire even looks pretty dang cool, if a tire can really look "cool", even has a thick lip to protect your rims from curb damage. I wasn't happy about the 188 out the door though, i was hoping for somethign to be around 150...... Oh well hopefully these will last me longer than 20k this time around,
Ryan

My dad had a car with a problem like that, it took some odd size tire that cost a mint to buy from the major manufacturers who carried it. He ended up getting a good tire at half the price from Cooper, and he swears by the brand now. I put a set of there 4-ply on my Chevy pickup, and I am getting great wear out of them.

Fulda's are a good bargain if you need to get a sport tire for cheap.

I noticed the "55" in the profile of the OEM specs you mentioned, and THAT is what puts the tires in the "sport" or "race" zone...no H-rated tires there.

Ever Consider Used Tires?

Check www.bordertire.com for used tires. They currently have 195/55/15 Bridgestone Potenzas for $50/pair. They are grade B1 which is 6/32" of tread depth (for sake of comparison, a brand new A1 tire has 9/32" of tread depth). Even after paying for shipping and mounting/balancing you will still probably save quite a few $$$ (I'm assuming your $65/tire includes all that).

I have only ever put brand new tires on my Benzes, but in past lives on my Geo Metro and assorted Dodge Caravan minivans as well as a KIA I once owned, I got tires from Border Tire. I usually got the A1 or A2 tires which were practically brand new and were pulled off new cars that were totalled (this is how they get a lot of their inventory). They won't sell a tire with uneven wear or dry rot; I've always had a good experience. I always saved at least a hundred bucks each time. Once I saved nearly two hundred, so to me it was worth it.

There are many factors to consider including warranty which you don't really get (I think they offer something like 30 days) as well as unknown age of the rubber. But you might want to give them a try.

I have no affiliation with them, just wanted to pass it along.
