Will Everyone in the 'Hood Get a Pontiac?

March 23, 2005 -- Oprah Winfrey is giving up her fancy surroundings to live in a public housing project in Chicago.

The talk show hostess, who's been known to give away cars to her entire studio audience, will spend a month in the downscale digs as part of a TV series she's producing about the housing crisis in the country's inner cities.

Unlike her new neighbors, the 51-year-old media mogul owns more than $100 million in properties — and has an annual income of more than $380 million.

She will be flanked by a team of security guards during the move, but will otherwise fend for herself, said her spokesman.

Winfrey's move will be a short ride from her spawling $12 million duplex condo on Michigan Avenue, known for its trendy shops and upscale apartments.

What if anything about this warrants a "news" story?
This is trash.

The living conditions of thousands upon thousands of low-income Americans? Yeah, what could possibly be newsworthy about that?

You missed his point. Oprah Winfrey, who makes $380 million dollars a year, exploiting the fate of these "thousands upon thousands" to increase her own fame, popularity, and thus personal wealth could easily be considered "trash news".

I don't think she is exploiting anything. She will only be shedding some light on a serious issue.

If she makes a little more more money and gets a little more popular while at the same time helping the housing conditions, who cares?

How is this a serious issue? Since she is in Chicage, I am going to assume she will be staying in one of the 2 larger projects in the city. The Robert Taylor homes are being knocked down, so that leaves Cabrini Green. I hate that place. Whenever I drive by there it always drives me nuts to see all of the satalite dishes and cars with $1000s in rims on them. The projects are not the problems, it is the people that live there. They definately have different priorities

Do you deny that this country has thousands upon thousands of people living in lousy public housing projects? How do you know that Oprah doesn't have good intentions? Have you done some research into her project that we don't know about? Regardless of who is at fault for the way these people are living, it seems to me that Oprah is doing a public service by using her fame and power to bring attention to a big problem. Why do you assume ahead of time that her portrayal of the housing projects will be inaccurate or unfair?

OK, so all of these people are living on easy street at our expense. Why wouldn't you want Oprah to publicize that situation?

Because she is not going to bring THAT kind of attention to it. She has a long history of portraying such people as "unfortunate victims", and that is OFTEN not the case.

Many, if not most, are there because of their own BAD CHOICES, pure and simple. This "inconvenient" fact is often ignored, especially by Oprah and her loyal army of hyper-sympathetic suburban housewives.

Maybe you guys know more about Oprah that I do, because I have no idea how she is going to cover this story. I would say, "We'll see," but that would imply that I plan on actually watching her show and I doubt that is going to happen.

Their situation is still newsworthy.
