Post Another milestone for our state government....

The Legislature is likely to take action this year to make canned-meat producers pay the higher rate — a change that's worth $11 million a year to the state budget.

With a budget deficit of $1.6 billion for the upcoming two-year budget cycle, legislators say they'll take money where they can get it — including a tin of meat.

The budget proposals from Senate Democrats and Gov. Christine Gregoire both include higher cigarette taxes, and Senate Democrats also want to impose a higher liquor tax.

I can understand a higher "sin" tax, at least on cigarettes.

But on a product like meat that actually has a benefit to society?

Why? What next? If you don't eat at the FDA recommended guidelines you are causing your body harm and therefore should be taxed too? If you skydive, you are risking your body and possibly the healthcare system so you need to be taxed too? Where will it end?

Do you smoke?

Worse is that according to several sources, most folks who eat canned meat are poor. Even worse is that while the state long ago abolished sales taxes on most food, they still find a way to tax folks for it. For our gov it’s all about stealing from one "special" interest after another.

That is, when they’re not giving it away. There was another article where the Port of Seattle sold a property to a local produce distributor at a nice value. In less than a year the distributor re-sold the property and made millions off of the sale. The state’s logic in selling the property in the first place was that it would help to keep the produce distributor in the city. Naturally, the produce vendor never said it had any intension of moving……

Oh yeah, had the sold the property for what the food distributor did, it would have gained more revenue than the canned meat tax they want to implement....

Hi ho corporate welfare

Hi ho corporate welfare
So? They take companies for a ride all the time like this case we are discussing and now the company takes the city for a ride and all of a sudden it is a big ordeal? The governments have been jacking the business owners around too.

And how would they promise you all the wonderful things that they say on election day?

Problem is the citizens want all the benifits but none of the payments. The politician sells you on the benifits and doesn't tell you how they will get the money. They raise taxes on businesses and business are stupid. They don't know how to pass on the cost to the customer. As a business owner, here's how it works. My cost goes up, so does your cost.

Hmm, could the next "sin" to be taxed by carbohydrates? A carb-tax on bread and pasta products.

And that happens most in the Blue states..................John Q. Public doesn't get to extort money from their boss everytime they decide to spend more..or their expenses go up.

Well, they gotta come up with some way to pay for the new courses they want to start at our schools, "Warm & Fuzzy 101".

Ken Schram Commentary: Reading, Writing, And... Parenting?
March 29, 2005
By Ken Schram
SEATTLE - Try as I might, I don't get it.
I don't get what's demanded of schools versus what schools get in the way of money and resources.
That's why I'm left scratching my head over the "Family Preservation Curriculum."
This is a bill that encourages schools to start providing kids with classes to teach them things like how to build a loving relationship; how to be a responsible parent; how to resolve conflicts.
Hey, while they're at it, why not some classes on how to care for pets, or maybe a class on how to get the best deal on a used car?
In the meantime, maybe the state lawmakers who come up with these pie-in-the-sky ideas can tell us how they're going to pay for this "Family Preservation Curriculum?"
Who's going to teach it?
Hell, who's going to define it?
I mean, who gets to decide which families deserve to be preserved, and which one's don't?
And while we're focusing on so much preserving, pay no attention to the inconsequential stuff like reading and math; simply ignore the under funded approach the state takes with basic education, and don't give a second thought to underpaid teachers and overcrowded classrooms.
No siree. Just be happy that lawmakers pile on with ideas that do nothing but give everyone warm fuzzies.
But like I said, I don't get it.
