A letter to Dad

A father passing by his son's bedroom was astonished to see
>the bed was nicely made and everything was picked up. Then he saw an
>envelope propped up prominently on the center of the bed. It was
>addressed, "Dad".
>With the worst premonitions, he opened the envelope and read the
>letter with trembling hands:
>
>Dear Dad:
>It is with great regret and sorrow that I'm writing you. I had to elope
>with my new girlfriend because I wanted to avoid a scene with mom and you.
>I've been finding real passion with Joan and she is so nice, even with all
>her
>piercings, tattoos, and her tight motorcycle clothes. But it's not only
>the passion dad; she's pregnant and Joan said that we will be very happy.
>Even though you wouldn't care for her as she is so much older than me, she
>already owns a trailer in the woods and has a stack of firewood big enough
>for the
>whole winter. She wants to have many more children with me, and that's
>now one of my dreams too. Joan taught me that marijuana doesn't really
>hurt
>anyone and we'll be growing it for us and trading it with her friends for
>all the
>cocaine and ecstasy we want. In the meantime,we'll pray that science will
>find a cure for AIDS so Joan can get better. She sure deserves it!!
>Don't
>worry Dad, I'm 16 years old now and I know how to take care of myself.
>Someday
>I'm sure we'll be back to visit so you can get to know your
>grandchildren.
>
>Your son,
>
>John
>
>PS:
>
>Dad, none of the above is true. I'm over at the neighbor's house.
>
>I just wanted to remind you that there are worse things in life
>than my report card that's in my center desk drawer. I love you!

>Call when it is safe for me to come home.

My oldest daughter, now 20 years old, and a sophomore at a major university did something similar to me. She was 15 years old at the time.

She sent me an e-mail at work. The e-mail went something like this:

"Dad, I don't know how else to tell you this, but I am pregnant..."

After I nearly had a heart attack, I got back on my chair and read the rest of her e-mail.

She went on to write:

"Dad, I was just kidding. HONESTLY!!! But you have been spending so much time at work that we hardly ever get to see you and this was the only way to get your attention."

At the time, I was a supervising attorney for a major unit in our office. The very next day I walked into my boss' office and I told him to find a new supervisor.

It was difficult giving up the money and prestige of my position, but my family always comes first.

The other day the same daughter sent me a card from college.

It read something like this:

"Dear Mom and Dad. I want to thank you for always being there for me. No matter where I go, no matter what I am doing at school, it is comforting to know that the two of you will always be there to 'back my play.' You have given me the confidence to go out into the world and become the person that I now am. I love you and thank you both."

Cost of the new E55 that I could have bought with the extra income from being supervisor: About $70,000.00

Cost of the one-month cross country bike tour of Italy that I still have not taken: $10,000.00

Love and respect of my children: PRICELESS

I hope my kid never has to resort to that sort of thing, although I must say it's quite funny.

Well done LGB

Kuan:

Thanks.

I did have a talk with my daughter about the fragile condition of a Dad's heart and the need to avoid shock ot the system!
