What age did you start wearing glasses?

I just found out that I now have to. At 30, I guess it's not that unusual.

I heard I may have to upgrade to bifocals at 45. woopee.

I did in the fourth grade...........and have ever since.....Hate them with a passion.

Age 30

You guys have it easy. I began in the third grade and have had them ever since.

I'm so used to them that they really don't bother me anymore except when it rains or I'm doing an outdoor activity in the water. But it's no big deal.

I did notice yesterday that I couldn't focus up close on things unless I take them off. I just turned 40 last Friday (yes, April Fool's Day...), so maybe it's just a sign of the times.......

Age 48. A lot of people refuse to get glasses because it hurts their ego. They would rather walk around half blind,,, but they look good.

Maybe that's why I keep knocking things over, and bumping into things more lately!

I'm waiting for 50, just so I can add to the list among other age related dysfunction's in need of repair, that'll be next month, I cant wait! :(

I was one of those people. Not that glasses make me look worse or anything, I just didn't want to admit that I had something else wrong with me. I got my first glasses right after New Years, and they're bi-focals.

I had to start wearing them since 1st grade (I can't remember how old I was then  even though I am 26 now.) and have had to live with it ever since. I am still not comfortable with laser eye surgery. However my eyes don't dry out as fast when driving a boat, or getting a chunk of fresh steamed crab in the eye or getting yelled at by the rangemaster when shooting for not having eye protection...so it's not all bad :)

Age 7, severely myopia (nearsighted) not discovered until the teacher found I could not see the blackboard even from the front row.

Age 50, LASIK corrected to within 1.0 diopter in each eye, didn't need glasses to drive, etc... Yipee! :D

Now, age 55+, need slight correction for night, none for day. Bonus is, being slightly under-corrected, I don't need 'readers' for normal size type... :D :D :D

Jen, 30 onward would be considered normal for reading glasses, it varies from 30 to 50 or so.

Oh, I buy my 'readers' at the Dollar Store, cost $1.00, work just as good as any others.

Best Regards,
Jim

About 45 my arms became too short to be able to read the fine print. Been buying cheapo reading glasses ever since. I'm only up to 1.50 for normal reading (20+ years later), but I keep a pair of 1.75 on the night stand for reading in bed after a long, tiring day. Distance vision is still plenty good and I pass the eye test for a drivers license easily enough.

An observation: The more time spent in front of the computer screen or watching TV, the harder it is to read. Thinking of replacing all TV watching with golf and selling the 'puter....

Cheers,
Wes

48 or 49 I started wearing those cheap readers from the drug stores, with my optometrist approval. He didn't think I needed prescription.
By 50 though, my first real pair, and now bifocals.

Interestingly, I am an IT techie and have spent my entire life reading greenbar (computer paper), monitors and PC's.

40 years old.

Fortunately I am not required to wear them to drive, only if I need to read street signs. I usually only wear them when its dark out, my vision is terrible in the dark. Unfortunately I couldn't get away with a cheap pair of reading glasses since my prescription is -1 in both eyes.

Howdy All,
First glasses at 10. Had contacts for about 17 years then went back to glasses. At 50 had laser eye surgery. Best thing I have ever done. Use cheap readers for reading.

ericdee 04-05-2005 07:50 PM

Around 23, 24... I started to have a hard time reading street signs and street addresses at night.

Same here I am near sighted and need to take the glasses off to see things that are really up close......
