Are gas prices affecting your driving habits yet?

I just love paying $2.50 for diesel. It isn't really bothering me yet, but when it hits $3 I will probably try to drive less.

Since my house is 46 miles one way from my work, I have been staying at my family's house during the workweek quite a bit. I am thinkin of selling my house and moving back closer to my job. I am going to have to downgrade though...won't be able to get as nice of a place for the money.

That's why I dumped the 15mpg cherokee on my sister for a 28 mpg accord. I knew it was going to get worst. I've been telling all my friends for 2 years now.

What I did not expect was for diesel to be as expensive as regular gas. That's got me stumped for sure.

Surprisingly boat fuel is about 2.80 per gallon, only 40-50 cents more than car gas. I have typically paid up to a dollar more for boat fuel.

I think Marina owners prefer to swallow a bit of profit, as opposed to having no customers at all use their boats, esp at a storage marina like where mine is kept.

Imagine customers saying fock it, gas is 3.50 per gallon, I'll stay home, as I imagine some will.

What does the marina owner do then?

Can't sell other services to people who aren't using their boats can you?

Mostly, no. I'm not driving the SD as much, but other than that nothing's changed. That's what's nice about having a variety of vehicles. Something for every occasion

Nope. Just a fact of life. I am surprised to see the gas price in MD is almost a match to CA. Just got home after a week of absence. The Exxon gas station I drove by was selling Regular for $2.50 and high test for $2.85

Well my 300D gets mostly city miles, and I try to keep the RPM under 3000 on initial acceleration... sometimes i just cant resist, even though it has ample power at 2000 rpm or so. Usually the way I drive i get around 21 mpg. I'd like to go on a roadtrip and see what I get on 100% highway miles...

It hasn't changed my habits, I don't drive much anyway, and what I do drive isn't really negotiable. It has drawn my attention though...Geez, how high is it going to go? I was used to getting Diesel cheaper than regular; in my area its higher by about 2-7 cents/gallon.

Makes driving the Suburban a bit rougher (8-10 mpg on regular). Makes me glad I bought 2 diesel cars in the past 12 months. Driving the same, just use one of the diesels as much as possible. May go ahead and try veggy/fry oil in the '83 300D. Reg gas is $2.349 around here and diesel about $2.259. That make the diesel an even better deal. Flying J down the highway a bit had reg. for $2.249 and diesel for $2.169 the other day. They are almost always cheaper. Wife should be crying about putting 93 octane in her 560SL (16 MPG), but she just uses the CC so she doesn't really feel the pain-I do at end of the month! Then again, the hardtop will probably come off the car this weekend and then who cares about gas prices-let's go for a ride!

$2,000 to buy my SDL
$3,600 to maintain
$5,600 since last June
20,000 miles driven

$0.28 per mile to buy and maintain

$600 per year to insure ('fleet' discount)
$0.03 to insure

$0.31 per mile
$0.07 per mile 25 mpg, $1.75/gallon
$0.08 per mile 25 mpg, $2.00/gallon
$0.10 per mile 25 mpg, $2.50/gallon

$0.38 - $0.41 per mile, or $0.03/mile difference, or 8% increase.

I guess I won't change my driving habits too drastically...

That said, we use the Suburban only when we have a lot of stuff, or people, to haul, since that 40 gallon tank does get your attention at the pump!

Best Regards,
Jim

Red face Not too much yet . . .

. . . but that's only because I've always consolidated trips as much as possible, kept the car in top condition, tried to drive smoothly with less braking, etc. If I still had the 420SEL, which got 17 mpg, I'd definitely be rethinking every trip three times. Now, with the 4-cylinder W202 C230, I rethink a trip only once.

I'vbe been telling people right along that there was no guarantee that gas prices were going to stay (relatively) low. (I don't think $1.50/gal. was low, but that's for another thread.) Everybody shrugs and says, "Don't matter to me." Well, while they're gassing up their heavy fuel-wasters, I'll be cruising right along, and my budget won't be destroyed, because I planned for this. Hope for the best, plan for the worst, and you'll usually be ok. . . .

I think it's because less oil is refined into deisel fuel than gasoline. With less refined, the price remains high due to demand.

I bet up here this summer at the marina's diesel/gas are at or above $3 a gallon! I know where I work the mark up on fuel is very small, the owner likes to keep the price down. If people don't use their boats they won't break things. That means we won't have things to fix.

Next semester I will try to have all of my classes 2-3 days a week. That way insted of driving to New Haven 5 days a week I can cut out a couple of trips.
