Different Holiday ideas in/around Europe

Hi all,

Me and my GF are looking to go away somewhere cheap for a week next month (we live in the UK).

Last year we went to Florence which was lovely, and stayed in a quiet town outside the city. But this time would like somewhere with beaches.

Only problem is most of the travel sites just list Mallorca/Costa Del Sol/Tenerife etc. - basically the standard boring very touristy destinations.

Can anyone suggest somewhere warm, ideally beachy and nice to spend some quality time, and go out for quiet dinner a bit?

The thought of a hotel/beach filled with screaming children eating McDonalds doesn't fill me with joy.

cheers

Russ

Try the Dalmatian coast (Croatia). Dubrovnik is beautiful and historic, and wasn't completely destroyed in the late unpleasantness. Only caveat is lots of German vacationers on certain parts of the coast, though you may or may not care about that. Other thoughts might be the Greek islands, maybe one like Lesbos that isn't a tourist trap, or even Cyprus.

Croatia

I was going to mention that too! Really beautiful, especially Dubrovnik. Its a gem not many know about. The Greek Isles are nice too. Maybe a trip to Lake Constance in Germany, really nice as well!

Take the ferry from Plymouth to Roscoff and then enjoy the Brittany beaches. Not too warm this time of year, but we spent the summer there a couple of years ago and absolutely loved them. Very few 'touristy' spots and lots of wide open sand with nice hiking trails along the cliffs.

Thanks all for the suggestions, some very interesting ones I'll definitely bear in mind.

I finally decided on Menorca.. an obvious choice I'm afraid but it was very easily afforded by my girlfriend (She's becoming a schoolteacher so may never be able to afford somewhere fancy! I'm not rich but it's ironic to spend every waking hour talking about which 2nd Mercedes I'm going to buy..)

I think it'll be really nice. Don't think we'll be getting the quiet beaches like where she lives (see pic) but I'm sure we'll have a great time.

Thanks again,

Russ

Where's that beach?
By the way, I'm in Denver, CO, a great place to come for skiing in the winter. I'm in the process of setting up a house/car exchange with a member over at Benzworld for the Xmas holiday. I might be interested in SW England at some time, so if you're interested in Denver and an exchange, keep in touch.

That's Broad Haven beach, which is in Pembrokeshire, South West Wales.

One of the nicest parts of Britain I've spent time in, actually, maintaining a nice away-from-the-cities charm and very calming influence. If you go to Wales, you can't go wrong there.

Thanks for the suggestion Kerry, the idea of a house/car share is a really interesting one to me actually! However it would unfortunately have to wait until I have.. well, a house, before it would really work!

I will keep it mind though. Feel free to contact me.. if you want to know anything about the area, I currently live in Gloucestershire for the record.

I grew up in Pontypridd. My cousin lives in Pembrokshire--Abereiron (sp). I'm exchanging with a Benworld member from Barry. I'm looking forward to some nice hikes on the Gower peninsula.
You can exchange an apt. also.

Small world!

I hope to move into some sort of apartment or house soon..

In Pembrokeshire this last weekend, I went to visit another beautiful National Trust owned beach. It was lovely, but I'm not sure if you're aware that an enormous part of the coast in Pembrokeshire is a military rifle/tank firing range.

It's usually empty, but that day wasn't, so it was surreal to have the beach visit overlaid with the sound of machine gun fire and Chinook helicopters flying overhead!

Just as we were cresting a remote mountain pass in North Wales in our motorhome a few years ago, two fighter jets came thru the pass not 50' over our heads. Scared the living bejeezus out of us.
I've always wanted to paddle the Purgatoire River here in Colorado, just to get a sense of what my future holds, but it also is a tank range. Hate to have a round go thru my canoe.
You need to give me the exact location of those National Trust beaches.

Sure!

Broad Haven (in the previous picture, and more pictures at www.pentoman.com )

is here: http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=200000.835123575&Y=200000.408298147&width=700&height=400&gride=&gridn=&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=freegaz&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&zm=0&scale=100000&down.x=298&down.y=1

and Barafundle (the National Trust one), even prettier than the one above, is here: http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=200000.835123575&Y=195000.408298147&width=700&height=400&gride=&gridn=&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=freegaz&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&zm=0&in.x=10&in.y=11&scale=50000

and it looks like this:

see what I mean?

And finally, easily accessable by car, there's Freshwater West, a more lively surfing location here

it's very lovely, be sure to drop a post into this thread if you are thinking of going there.
