How to find the least expensive mover....?

Need to move some things from Indiana to Wisconsin, about 450 miles.

Two bedrooms of stuff (one heavy solid oak, a refrigerator, a heavy solid oak dining set, an large organ (for sale if anybody needs an awesome organ - a Lowery C500), an entire garage full of stuff, including lotsa big-block chevy stuff, table saw, arm saw, tools, tools, tools. I'm guessing 8000 pounds?

Need to do this on-the-cheap. Changing jobs and getting a lump sum for the move. Not moving the stuff in Saint Joseph; keeping the condo.

Any suggestions? What about "Two Men and a Truck"? They seem to be a low budget kinda outfit.

I've read about all the scams out there, so i want to use a recognized company, but I'm getting prices all over the place. Help?

Rent a truck yourself....buy a few cases of beer and get buddies to help you load.....drive it yourself and hire a new neighbor and their kid to help you unpack....cheaper...far safer than hiring an unknown mover...have heard too many horror stories about movers recently.\
Not what you asked for I know...but its what I would do in your situation.

Just remember that in finding the cheapest, you often get what you pay for. Make sure to check references and take a look at their insurance papers to ensure that breakage, loss, etc. is covered.

ABF Freight systems has a real slick moving system - MOVE You can also hire people at both ends to pack/unpack - or get friends as mentioned in above thread. Better than driving a 28' Diesel U-Haul @ 50 mph.

There are some moving scams out there. They quote you a stupid low price and then don't release your stuff until you've paid for the move, sometimes at thousands of dollars more than the estimate.

Best bet is to have a moving party. 400 miles isn't that far to drive, even in a U-Haul.

insurance

when you set up for insurance from the movers be sure to get replacement cost. otherwise you'll be paid by the pound. the companies i worked for in the past were paying so i did full replacement. but that was 1987 the last time i moved across country. just be sure to ask for the replacement cost at least.

also be sure you are there when they unload so you can be sure to get the heavy pieces put exactly where they belong. don't want to move them twice.

i'd also pack my glass and breakables myself and move them myself. if you pack and they move you may not be able to file a claim. both of our move were full pack outs and move in and unpacked. you need to be sure of your move in date. if they go directly to the new house and can't move in they can charge storage.

Best place to find an inexpensive mover is to look in the mirror.
I hired a moving company about 15 years ago. Two days after their appointed arrival and repeated assurances that they were on the way, I concluded they were not going to make it.

The problem with any interstate move is that they have you over a barrel. They agree to a price and then, if they are disreputable, they won't deliver your goods until you pay additional money. There is very little recourse in such a situation. Additionally, any damages that they cause are another nightmare to deal with.

The aggravation of dealing with these folks is not worth the effort. If you have any possibility of doing it yourself, you will thank yourself in the end.

And, for the few times that I had to rent one of the 24 foot trucks, I was quite impressed with Penske. Decent rates and nice equipment. Better avoid U-haul like the plague, if you value your life.
