Going to Costa Rica! need tips

I have a week off between the end of summer and the start of the fall term. One of my girlfriends managed to do a timeshare swap in San Jose. So off we go.

Since the place is free to me, I offered to pay for the car rental. From what I read the roads are bad so a 4x4 is necessary to really explore the country.

My to anyone who has been there is two fold:

1. how bad is the parking in san jose?
2. is it smarter to make the car reservation here in the states or when i get in country? or is it smarter to just rent the car for a day at a time on the days when we need a car.

Any tips are appreciated!!!

my friend told me similar stories of his car being broken into. He had things locked in the glovbox, in a locked truck. Got back to the truck, drove down the road realized they needed their wallets, had to stop the car and unlock the glovebox, all items gone. the theives had relocked the glovebox and the door....crazy

There is a contributor here, A. Rosich, who lives in San Jose, Costa Rica. Maybe he can provide advice or give you some help on your trip.
