Car cover for re-painted car

I just bought a project car that has a new paint job. I want to cover it because it will be stored in a dusty location. Advance Auto has three types of cover, each of which says not to use it on re-painted cars.

Why do you suppose the covers aren't supposed to be used on re-painted cars?

Any recommendations for protecting this car from dust?

Because the paint is still not completly dry, if you cover it the wind will move the cover around and "sand" the new virgin paintjob.

Tyvek

I recommend a Tyvek cover. Tyvek is like a rip proof paper, one common use of Tyvek is for disposable booties and aprons. I've had one on my long-suffering repainted Sprite in the gagrage, perfect just to keep junk from accumulating on the body and inside the car. It has had a few holes torn in it from sharp edges on the car, but big deal, it's keeping it clean, when the car is reassembled it'll probably STILL work fine, as long as the car is kept inside it's perfect! Here is a link to Moss Motors, this may be about the right size, it's an SL, right?

I would not cover it until its had at least 6 months in the warmer weather to cure.

better dirty than have the paint abraded by a cover...or worse by dirt under the cover....

No, it's a 1974 MGB. Prior owner stripped it down to bare shell, repainted it, and ran out of steam. I am buying all the pieces and hope to have it on the road as a daily driver this fall. I figure the B will be a nice change of pace from my other daily driver, a1985 300D. I guess they can't both be daily drivers. They'll be 3-1/2-day-per-week drivers, I suppose.

I think a Tyvek cover would fit the bill perfectly, go to mossmotors.com, they do have a MGB catalog too. That one for the the Sprite would probably fit a B OK. I assume wind wouldn't be a problem, you said it'll be inside right?

If he was going to be parking it near where I picked up the parts car he gave me a cover would not be a good idea as its under cover but upon to wind buffeting.....if in in a totally enclosed structure with zero wind then a cover isn't as bad of an idea.......

Oh......DCulkin....good going....I wanted a crome bumper MGB project too....but most are overpriced or too badly rusted for my taste.

bonehead,
The B will be in the same tractor shed, which is far from totally enclosed. The paint is old enough to get a good coat of wax. I think I will do that and then leave it uncovered. That's probably the safest route.

This B was overpriced but not rusted at all, so I am happy.

OK, then I would wax it real good.....you don't want a cover with dust under it moving back and forth with the wind....and dust would get under it...in that shed You could hang a tarp at the opening and sides to keep wind driven rain out.and cut down on the wind somewhat, plus under a cover there it woud be more inviting for a rodent to take up residence.....

As an afterthought I would get a large piece of heavy guage plastic to lay on the ground as big as the stall, then weigh down the ends and get the car into it.....to help reduce the moisture from the ground being too close to the underside of the car.........thats far worse than the moisture in the air over a longer period of time.

That should not be a tarp....but a solid piece of plastic. Tarps are woven and porous to moisture.

That will greatly lengthen the life of the car....particularly if its going to be a long term project. And a good idea when its being stored.
