What do you think?

This morning, in the daily paper, I saw a verly lightly used 300SL for only 5500$. It is a 1990, but it is excellent condition and it has 100,000 miles. I think that this is a good deal. Any suggestion on what to look for on a 300SL?

Yeah, make sure the soft top works well. The control module and the hydraulic cylinders fail frequently. Big $$$.

That price is FAR below market value, even for its mileage. I would be suspect that the owner got a pretty expensive quote for a repair that he'd just as soon unload the car rather than fix.

Look up the market value of the car and subtract the asking price. The difference is the cost of repair that you don't know about yet but would be shelling out soon...

...btw, I'm not aware of the convertible top being a big failure issue with these cars other than wear and tear, combined with the complexity of the system. The front hydraulic cylinders do give out over time, but you can buy these for around $150 and replace them in under an hour with a screwdriver and a small wrench.

Do tell -- where can one buy these cylinders for around $150? New? Refurbished? They list for around $450 and I know no other source. The modules are also quite popular and a cost a lot more money than the cylinders.

Have you actually looked at the the car or does the add just say it is nice? People lie like crazy when they are selling cars. It seems way to cheap something is probably wrong.

I have looked at this car

I have looked at this car, and it is really nice. The only problem that I have seen on this car would be the lines. I think that it has been rear ended. The lines on the trunk do not line up. I have to call the fellow selling this car and see if it has a salvaged title or not. Other than that, it runs beautifully and the top is a little finicky. I was looking for that hard top and it was no where in sight. I think that this car may be one to pass up. I am still going to continue the search for the 500SL. There is one here at a little car dealer and I am going to go take a look at it later today.

Here is my source for parts I can't get at Fastlane:

Tom Hanson, Orange County Section
(Caliber Motors, Wholesale Parts Dept 800 252-6877)

Locking top cylinder 129-800-16-72

$104 is what my receipt states for one cylinder, purchased last summer.

Tom also sold me a new W124 zebrano center console for $168!

Oh I see what you got now -- that's a fair/average price for that. The part that people call for all the time is the complete assembly, which includes that cylinder. The assembly is a bunch more.
