'83-'87 Cavalier converts

This may be a repeat of the ugliest/ worst car threads.... but I learn so much from this site. Kind of like an automotive Wikipedia... I figure rust is a problem with these ASC converts, and I know they're underpowered, and I guess the "beauty" is subjective.... the carsurvey website tends to mention their basically rugged nature, even if 'everything else' falls apart on them. BUT, it's a cheap convert (don't know how cheap yet- just saw it on the morning commute)- and maybe it's the one car that's had the oil changed every 3000 miles Opinions and short jokes, please.... anybody had one/loved one/hated one?

25 hours later you got one response, mine, and I haven't a clue?

Only thing I could suggest is check it over real good for rust. Convertibles are structured very differently than sedans. Many convertibles have been caught in rain showers with top down and soaked everything leaving lots of moisture under the carpets. Look closely at the floor pans. Pull the carpet up to look if you suspect rust.

I had an 86' Cav Z-24. Not the convert of course, but my first REAL car that announced that I had detached fully from geekdom...a "chick magnet (so I thought).

All I can add to this is that you are here presumably because you own at least one MB. And the marque's strong suit is longevity.

Not so with GM. First three years of ownership from new is fine, but after that, it goes to a steep downhill...repairs and just plain cheap parts breaking everywhere. Before you know it, you have a vehicle with a million little odd problems, and you just want to unload the sucker to someone who is enamored by the...convertible top for instance, (yeah, that's it).

good points

The car looks good from 20 feet away... at 50MPH. It's got 174000 miles on it: how does such a car even REACH that kind of mileage? An absolute beater- tempting for $1800. Only $18 per month for 100 months..... new tires and a recent top with a clear window. Will probably never be driven in the rain.... and it's in the last year of its body style! (fully developed, as we like to say)

Not serious- just goofing around on a rainy Saturday....
