BTW, I've seen SW twice now and as far as I'm concerned, there are lots of gee wiz special effects but the movie is pretty dull. Lots of recycled lines. IMHO, Empire is the best one.

SW E III was the best of the "new" films. Empire was the best for sure. E III has some cheesiness in there, and I didn't like the "frankensteinization" of Darth Vader at the end, but it was expected. I saw the midnight show because I am a huge nerd.

I saw it last Friday with my 9 yr. old daughter. A bit of a mistake. The movie is little depressing for a child that age. But, in the end, I liked the movue, it was a nice way to spend a few hours in the theatre. I have seen/walked out on worse films.
And I agree, the last scene is impresive. Now all I have to do is to watch the original three movies this weekend and see if it all lines up? Iggy

There's going to be an extra scene included in the DVD release
of EMPIRE STRIKES BACK coming up next year! Basically, it expands on the scene where Vader reveals his fatherhood to Luke, and ties up some loose ends created with the release of Episode 1 & 2... The Empire Strikes Back: Extra-Special Edition INT: BESPIN GANTRY - MOMENTS LATER: A furious lightsaber duel is underway. DARTH VADER is backing LUKE SKYWALKER towards the end of the gantry. A quick move by Vader, chops off Luke's hand! It goes spinning off into the ventilation shaft. Luke backs away. He looks around, but realizes there's nowhere to go but straight down. Darth Vader: Obi Wan never told you what happened to your father. Luke: He told me enough! He told me you killed him! Darth Vader: No... I am your father! Luke: No, it's not true! It's impossible. Darth Vader: Search your feelings... you know it to be true. Luke: NO! Darth Vader: Yes, it is true, and you know what else? You know that brass droid of yours? Luke: Threepio? Darth Vader: Yes... Threepio... I built him... when I was 7 years old... Luke: No...! Darth Vader: Seven years old! And what have you done? Look at yourself, no hand, no job, and couldn't even levitate your own ship out of the swamp. Luke: I destroyed your precious Death Star! Darth Vader: When you were 20! When I was 10, I single- handedly destroyed a Trade Federation Droid Control ship! Luke: Well, it's not my fault... Darth Vader: Oh, here we go... "Poor me... my father never gave me what I wanted for my birthday... boo hoo, my daddy's the Dark Lord of the Sith...waahhh wahhh!" Luke: Shut up... Darth Vader: You're a slacker! By the time I was your age, I had exterminated the Jedi knights! Luke: I used to race my T-16 through Beggar's Canyon. Darth Vader: Oh, for the love of the Emperor... 10 years old, winner of the Boonta Eve Open... Only human to ever fly a Pod Racer... right here, baby! {Luke looks down the shaft. Takes a step towards it.} Darth Vader: I was wrong... You're not my kid... I don't know whose son you are, but you sure ain't mine... {Luke takes a step off the platform, hesitates, then plunges down the shaft.} {Darth Vader looks after him.} Darth Vader: Get a haircut! |

I liked the first three (last 3?) back in the day but the first 2 prequels left me feeling almost like a sucker for adding funds to George Lucas's estate. I mean they were kinda fun if you overlooked the vast stretches of dubious diddling.
I like my sci-fi to have at least a shred of scientific plausibility, and the scene where Samuel Jackson is sitting in the big room with a view of aerial traffic looking like freeways in the sky was just too much. One small mechanical mishap and uh-oh....a few $million in losses and more. And that whole planet was supposedly one big city? WOO -- HOO, we done died and gone to hell! And then the aerial hot rodding in the second prequel with the pretty boy stud muffin, oh yeah, Anniken -- again just too much. Maybe I'm getting old and cranky...

Just curious -- what was it that you found plausible in the first three?

Well, that is a good point. You do have to suspend disbelief for a lot of movies if you want to enjoy yourself and get the gist of whatever great life lesson the writer/film-maker was trying to get across.
The first three had a little more sparkle and excitement for me and I liked the underground domes in the desert. I'm getting to be a bit of a luddite on the whole space travel thing in general, though. I mean the guys that come back from the space station have to be carried out in stretchers a lot of the time. Plus, they figure that on a manned trip to mars, you'd be exposed to so much solar radiation that they're not sure what the effect would be. And as far as finding life on another planet, well, I have no doubt that there are other planets in the universe that support some kind of life, but finding them would make finding a needle in a haystack look like child's play. I mean, can you imagine, it would take thousands of years w/ current tech. to get to the nearest star. Assume we could shorten that to 20 years, and put aside the fact that the experience would be worse than being in jail -- tiny confined space, and you can't go outside. You get to the star and it has 2 planets like Mercury, one or two like Jupiter, and 4 or 5 like Sauturn. Maybe we'll get to where we can learn details about planets ahead of time, but now, we can barely discern that they are even there, and that is from blips in the stars' position from the tiny pull of gravity the planets exert. Even if a star had an earth like planet, who's to say whether it would be at the proper stage in its life-span to support life? Our earth was as hot as Veunus for millions of years and will likely be as cold as Mars for millions more in some distant future. So, you're at the star and you realize there's nothing with the remote possibility of having liquid water or much oxygen. OK, what's the next closest star? Let's see here, another 25 years away... YAHHHHhhhhhhhhhh
