I love Star Wars and will likely sneek a break in the middle of the week and see it but some of those fans are Crrrrazy. The theater opened the movie @ 12am and there was a line of traffic 2.5 miles long to the theater. I'm sure only about 1/3 of those miles actually got in to the movie.



Stellar 'Sith' is box office's new hope

Despite breaking several box office records, Sith wasn't able to stop the box office slump — but repeat viewings could change that.

Star Wars, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, George Lucas' gloomy final installment of his space saga, took in a whopping $158.5 million since opening Thursday, according to estimates from Nielsen EDI.

Along the way, Sith broke several ticket-sales records. It not only became the biggest four-day opener, it grossed more in four days than any other movie has in five. It also had the best single day at the box office, taking in $50 million on Thursday. (Related chart: See the weekend's top 10 movies)

About the only record left standing was biggest three-day opening weekend, the Friday-through-Sunday span that is usually a movie's most lucrative. Because Sith opened on Thursday and business then tapered off, the film's $108.5 million weekend total fell short of 2002's Spider-Man, which opened on a Friday and took in $114.8 million.

Not that distributor 20th Century Fox was complaining. The film scored high marks with fans and critics, giving the studio hopes for a long run. About 83% of the nation's critics gave the film a positive review, according to the survey site rottentomatoes.com.

"We're getting great response in every corner," Fox distribution chief Bruce Snyder says. "Fans are coming out and getting right back in line."

Strong word of mouth, analysts say, probably will propel the film past $400 million and could make it one of the five highest-grossing films ever.

"This was the movie we'd been waiting for," fan Ronnie McDaniels, 22, said Saturday night after seeing the film for a third time at Arclight Cinemas in Los Angeles. McDaniels says he will see Sith "at least twice more. This is the last Star Wars. I want to say a long goodbye."

Sith's start wasn't enough, however, to end the industry's three-month drought. Overall ticket sales dropped 6% from the same weekend last year, the 13th straight weekend sales have lagged behind last year's pace.

"The industry had pinned its hopes on Star Wars," says Paul Dergarabedian of Exhibitor Relations. "But one movie isn't enough. Star Wars hit a home run, but we need other movies up there hitting triples and doubles if we're going to catch up."

Monster-in-Law was No. 2 with $14.4 million, and Kicking and Screaming was third with $10.5 million. Final figures are due Monday.

Havent seen the movie yet. Didn't want to sit in a crowded theater :) Probably see it this week after the madness calms down.
But with so many people with DVD's, 5.1 systems and large TV's they can pretty much have the movie experience at home and not have to pay for expensive bad food or miss a dialog because the person next to you is euphoric about Yoda fighting or something :D

Or someone disturbing everyone with their oh so important cell phone converstaion that everyone in the theater can hear over the movie.

I saw it thursday - Definatly worth the money/time. It was kind of depressing, but I knew the inevitable would happen.

I loved Obi One Kanobi's lizard thing that he rode around on and the sounds that it makes. Also, the very last scene is very spectacular.

Saw it the other day, it was a good movie. But you have to see the first two and the last 3 for it to make sense. My friend didn't and he didn't really understand the magnitude of what was going on.

I have always been a Darth Vader fan! :D Come on the suit is so cool it screams evil overlord!

pretty well done. very thinly veiled allegory of our current political situation, however. really impressive visually, and 'ol darth sidious delivers a pretty good performance. Ewan Mcgreggor does a very good job as well.

when I was in college, we would pull everybody's speakers out of their dorm rooms and put them in the lounge of the dorm, hooked up in frightening fashion to some AV equipment we would borrow from the school. Huge screen, 20+ speakers... and we'd watch the Star Wars Trilogy. Kids today would be doomed! 6 movies, plus that goofy ewok adventure!

We had one showing for the dork fans: stop and look at all the mistakes, recite lines, etc. Then the next day when they had it out of their systems we'd have another normal showing.

Fun fun

I liked it a lot, im not a huge star wars nerd but I always appreciated the series. My favorite segment was the montage with Anakin and the clones slaughtering all the Jedi, the music did its job very well...

What does it say about our society when people cannot pay attention (be quiet) for two hours?

Went to a movie the other day....people talking, getting up every five minutes, phones ringing.....

I know what you mean....and its not like its a $1.00 matinee showing either....its a pretty expensive outing to go see a movie in a theater these days.

You expect that behaviour from preschoolers...not adults.

Two Star Wars fans are in a critical condition in hospital after apparently trying to make light sabres by filling fluorescent light tubes with petrol.

A man, aged 20, and a girl of 17 are believed to have been filming a mock duel when they poured fuel into two glass tubes and lit it.

The pair were rushed to hospital after one of the devices exploded in woodland at Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire.

A third person present at the incident had been questioned, police said.

Videotape found

A videotape was found nearby by police called to the scene on Sunday.

A police spokeswoman said the pair were taken to West Herts Hospital before being transferred to the specialist burns unit at Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, in Essex.

They are both said to be in a critical condition.

She said the 17-year-old girl and a 20-year-old man from Hemel Hempstead suffered serious injuries.

She added: "At this stage we are unable to confirm the exact circumstances, but glass tubes and traces of accelerant (flammable substance) were found at the scene."

The final film in the Star Wars series, Revenge Of The Sith, arrived at UK cinemas last week.

One of the crucial scenes features a light sabre battle between Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi and Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker.

Sounds like they were trying to get into the running for this years Darwin awards.

In other news a gas station was sued today for selling a dangerous material to babbling idiots. Their lawyer was quoted as saying, "they never would have lit it on fire if the attendant had told them it was dangerous".

Their Lawyer should be disbarred for stupidity...............

It wouldn't surprise me though.
