Mercedes Quality?
Does anyone think the current crop of Benzes will be around in 20 years? Or will we be driving used Maybachs and Rolls-Royces to get our fix of old-time quality?

Not sure any modern car will be around in 20 years. Too much electronics that eventually cause all kinds of problems that are hard to find. Spending a ton of money keeping your old favorite on the road is not worth it.
In my investigation of a sedan to buy, I thought the stereo system in the 3xx series was not as good as other systems I encountered in other vehicles. And I also wanted a cassette player. Mercedes is going to have to get their act together before I buy another one. Sad but true.

I have faith that the electronics are getting better. My '85 has had its share of electronic gremlins, but its still pluggin along after 20 years. I'm wondering more about the hardware - engines and bodies and suspensions. Or which model is most likely to survive 20 years?

My W126 will make its 20th birthday, after I replace 1/2 the car.
Cars are built to last 10 years or 100k miles, after that sure any car will last you just have to replace tons of stuff.

I doubt very many of the current crop of plastic Benzes will make it to 20 years old.................

So maybe the M-class has the best chance of survival, given its more rugged nature.

'Dunno.
My 240D has been around for over 20 years. Should go another 20 and then some. Any reason the new ones wouldn't be even better...? - Patrick

Well, MB offers 30-year rust warranty in Europe. MB’s sold in the US should have the same paint, rustproofing wax, and sealant.

I junked a awesume running car a few years back becasue I couldn't get a good transmission for it......becasue the engine put out way more power than the trans could handle the junkyard transmissions were no better....The newer Benzes are overly complex to allow then a long life enjoyed by the W123 , W116 and earlier chassis....

They offer that warranty in Europe because they don't use salt. The paint, etc. are all the same, it's just the lack of salt. In Europe you learn to drive in snow and ice.
Thanks David

As we have seen from our Cuban and Eastern European cousins . . . pretty much anyone with a metal turning tools can keep the old technology cars on the road on the cheap. Since the introduction of the "canbus" backbones in Mercedes sedans back in the 90's . . . in addition to mechanical engineering, you'll need an EE to get all the old eproms and sensor circuits in shape to hit two decades. Think about what computer you might have been using in the early 80's . . . Apple II, TRS-80, Sinclair . . .
