motorcycle talk...Suzuki RE5

going to look at one Friday. May be able to get it cheap. New battery and it is supposed to be in very good cosemtically and mechanically. I know they were quirky beasts but I am looking for collectability not a daily driver. I have looked on Ebay and various sites at prices. I was wandering what I could get for it in Walnecks?

Is that the one with the rotary engine from the mid 1970's?

Yes, that was a rotary. I'm not a collector, but I think an RE-5 would be a very cool piece of motorcycle history to have.

Yeah, I'd like to try one of those once, don't know if I've ever seen one in person. One dumb thing I did was to get rid of a Kawasaki H2, also called a Mach IV, that's the 750 2 stroke triple. Engagement ring.........I sold it to buy an engagement ring. Let this be a lesson to all you young fellers out there, don't let wimmin turn yer brain to mush. It can sneak up on ya and affect your thinking until you have the results that you see here today. The guy who bought it was married, so it shows that you can be involved with wimmin without your brain turning to mush. That was one lucky guy.

If you see an old bike like that in great condition, grab it. If it is a fixer, check parts prices and availability.

I passed on a primo RE5 ten or so years ago for $2000 and I still wish I bought it. Never rode the rotary but I burned-up many miles on Kawasaki triples and would grab another of those in a hearbeat. I rebuilt a few of those crankshafts back in the day, tedious. The H2 had porkchop flywheels, especially tedious.

I dunno Gilly. The H2 was a very, very evil bike. I you hadn't sold it, you might not be here today. I love anti-social machines as much as the next guy, but self-preservation is a strong instinct too...

I had one (H2), ported with Bassani pipes. I worked great while accelerating and decelerating but surged like a bronco at steady cruise. A low 11 bike with 13 second brakes and handling. My GF now wife and I crossed the country on it. She sure wouldn't do it now. Funny, neither would I.

Mine was a 75, the last official year, and they had a longer swingarm that planted it pretty well, within reason. I never inadvertantly lifted the front. I did a couple times on my S3A 400 triple, and once on my K75 (!), so it's not like it's never in me to inadvertantly lift a front end. The 75 H2 was pretty stable compared to the earlier ones, and especially compared to the H1!
I had chambers by FBG, I don't remember surging at highway speeds, I had it pretty well sorted out. When I got rid of it, it was getting close to top-end time, little piston slappin' action.

That surging sounds like it had a carb balance issue......

What a nightmare!!!! I just drove an hour out and an hour back to look at a total piece of ****. Out in redneck country, I could barely understand the guy selling. He barely spoke 3 words to me. I took a good look at the bike and all the plastic on the guages were yellow to the point that you couldn't read them. The chrome was white and all the rubber including the tires were crakced or split. I told him that I talked to his wife on the phone and she said it ran good with the new battery. I sat and looked at him and he stared back..................about 3 minutes of staring later I asked if he could fire it up. It started right up but idled like crap. I asked if it was just cold and he shook his head yes. After about 4 minutes of idling I asked if the choke was off and it was. I grabbed the throttle and revved it 3 times and then it just shut off.

I could go on and on. Big disappointment. Won't budge from $1000. he told me they were only made 2 years (bull****) and there were only 4 in the state of PA (bull****)
