I promise you, some NGO and some member of Congress are looking at this as a good idea.

You gotta keep your boot heel on their miserable necks.

$2.29/gallon for diesel isn't stopping folk from going where they want to go or slowing anyone down, why would this?

Tragic

It's getting pretty tragic, I left England in 2000 when I was offered a transfer to the US office. At the time road tax was about 160 GBP/year and gas was 89 pence liter. At that time it was crippling. Now they have put a law in place that charges motorists 5 GBP every time they drive into London (4 million + people live and work in london) and now this!

At the time I left, only 40% of the revenue generated by road tax actually went back into the road. This is the black back door taxes that I have come to expect of Tony Blair's goverment.

Thats Hiway robbery......literally..

Around here its the less wealthy that drive the furthest...none can live close to the city any longer becasue of prices....

THats the best way for a politician to get recalled.....I know I would support a recall of ANY politician who so much as joked about such a stupid plan.

Trouble is, we'll all take it lying down as per usual 'cause nobody wants to 'make a fuss'.
I support the idea for some roads, but not rural roads and not at all times. as long as my road tax and fuel duty dissapears. I think SUV's should be made to pay more too

You've already got a form of it in the states- if you want to get anywhere moderately quickly in the tri-state area you have to pay per mile on the turnpike - and drive at archaic speed limits.

They did it once with the fuel blockade

People did it once with the fuel blockade, I think it needs to happen again.

100% agree

alabbasi - yes, they did it with the fuel blockade and it was great. However, how many people was it that took part in that? Very few, something like 20-50 just sitting outside some fuel depots.

Face it, the British like to moan to one another. Additionally, they don't like standing up; either to be seen or to face up to something.

So don't bother getting your hopes up for any sort of actual resistance, regardless of how much people dislike something.

Imagine all the people who have stood up for what they believe. Martin Luther King, Jesus, Michael Moore... no-one British could ever manage that.

But I'd be happy if you could prove me wrong .

(n.b. Irony of moaning about British people allowing themselves to be screwed over, and not doing anything about it .

Not a good ideal to mention Micheal Moore in the same breath as Marten Luther King....

Micheal Moore is a fat blowhard with a tenacios grip on reality and a bad attitude...

Marten Luther King had a noble casue.......those two share nothing in common.

With the British goverments penchant for speed cameras and the like I can certainly see this being used for speed enforcement too. The english really bend over and take it everytime

Goverment taxes

When I lived there, it appeared to me that the country was moving in a direction where it would only pay to be on welfare. If you were on welfare, you could afford a flat in London; have your kids meals paid for and get subsidies for everything. I am pretty sure that if this law passes, they will cut a deal for people on welfare where they do not have to pay the charge.

Thatcher turned the country from a products country to a services country and now it appears that with talent and a capacity to earn is being taxed so hard that talent is now leaving the country so that the can afford to leave. I know a number of people who just packed up and moved to Spain because they can no longer afford a house in London. If your on income support, the council will pick up the tab.

SUV owners already pay...the parts and service costs for them and the fuel costs are higher than most vehicles........

This next quote from the BBC, will lead to lots of vehicles running around on UK roads with tin/lead foil in strategic places....

""............
Every vehicle would have a black box to allow a satellite system to track their journey, with prices starting from as little as 2p per mile in rural areas....""

yea, I think there will be ways around it for those willing to pay for the technology. I already have a GPS speed camera detector that's saved my bacon a few times

And Yal- we don't take it quite as much as you guys- look what your president's done while he's been in office! Oh, hang on a minute, Tony likes to bend over for Dubya whenever he can...

Anyway, I'm gonna enjoy blasting around the country in my Merc for 'free', while I still can!
