Silencers....

I'm not planning on shooting anyone, at least not yet, but I was wondering where the heck do silencers come from? are they homemade, or are they purchased by law enforcement only?

I would imagine anyone with a machine shop can make one, or is that jsut in the movies. Steveb Seagal comes to mind.

I heard they were illegal to buy/sell.

Just curious.

Thanks

They can be made at home...in the UK I had one on my army issue ..forget who manufactured it....seem to remember Birmingham Small Arms...
took mine off because it was too heavy....made a difference to muzzle velocity too. At least...the bullet drop increased.
We where never issued ear protection.

I said...WE WHERE NEVER ISSUED EAR PROTECTION.

They are illegal in the US but they are easy to make and there are other countries where they can be made. http://people.howstuffworks.com/question112.htm

They (silencers/suppressors) aren't illegal if registered with the BATF and comply with state law.

Please don't ban me OK It is legal to talk about.

First you need and aluminum baseball hat. Cut the bat off where the grip meets the business end.

Thread the end of the gun barrel and drill and tap the end of the bat.
Drill holes in the bat about 1/2 in diameter maybe less.
Wrap the bat with metal screen and secure with duct tape
Wrap carpet padding around the bat and secure with duct tape.
Wrap the carpet padding with metal screen.
Make an end piece for the bat.

install and go puff puff, make sure you use subsonic round though.

You really need to short load the rounds to keep them sub sonic...the muzzel blast is not the only loud thing...bullets also create a mini-sonic boom.....

Now that does turn your ballistics to crap......but thats the tradeoff....

If I remember correctly the silencer was designed by Sir Hiram Maxim who designed the "Maxim Gun" and the muffler when he was experimenting with it. I believe the silencer was tested on a Luger.

Oh and sliencers are Class III items which require special BATF transferring etc...

Oh...yeah...that is no small thing......Getting busted on Class III firearms violations means everyone on the police force takes times practicing full body cavity searchs on you.....adn some of them have large hands and don't give the courtesy of a reach around either.

And if you really upset them they make you spend the night with Janet Reno...

Imagine that... IL is basically "N" straight across the board. Thank you Chicago!

My brother lives in IN... he can get his hands on just about anything. His friend is a forensics guy with the IN state police and has a class III license. They have "gun days" out at his place once in a while and forensics classes from all over the place come out to shoot MP40's, MG42's, BAR's, Thompsons, Vickers guns, Bren guns, Stens, Grease Guns, M1's, etc... The guy also has a couple of halftracks and some tracked antitank guns. Andy (my brother) got to attend one of these last month and sent me pics... lucky bastard. I guess he must charge the university that sends the class for ammo... they sure burned off enough.

I was at a gun show in WI over Memorial Day weekend. I found two silencers for sale there. One was for a .22 caliber ($250). I came very close to purchasing a Tec-22 and the silencer, unfortunately the silencer wouldn't fit the threading on that particular piece. So I ended up buying a Romanian AK-47 semi-auto with a 30 and 40 round clip.
