DOT letter of compliance
i am trying to register a european specification 500 SEL in california, i went to DMV and they tell me that i need to get a letter of compliance from the EPA, and the DOT. i called both and nobody i talked to knew what i was talking about, i guess it is a letter stating the car meets U.S. safety guidelines for that year. has anyone else had to deal with this? any advise of what i should do? thanks in advance. How'd you get the car into the country?

info
thanks for the link MTI, but the car has already been legally imported in 1986 in michigan, but for some reason california is requesting the compliance letters, still unsure why. i will use the info to contact those agencies, thanks again

Therre should be stickers or plats on the car certifying compliance. The papwerwork should be around somewhere, porevious owner and the DOT even. The Gov't never throws anything out, with certain exceptions.
