Eliminating pet odors
We have three (3) cats. One of them has a urinary tract ailment that requires special food. Along with this change in food has been a change in the odor--not an improvement, either. This is a short-term issue as the cat can retiurn to his regular diet after a month.
In the mean time, we are trying to decide what we can do to reduce the odor problem. One possibility is to get a carpet steamer so we can keep the carpets cleaner--he is a neutered male who feels the need to mark his territory. Another possibility is to get an indoor ionizing air filter. Do any of you have experience with either of these products--what would you recommend, specificm models appreciated? Will either help with the odor issue? |

We have our share of cat problems. A florescent black light is essential for spotting saturation. It shows up a pale yellow/purple under the light. There are a number of products such as one called “Nature’s Miracle” which will eliminate the odor. You have to use about 4x the volume of spray as was deposited by the cat to work properly. We’ve found that letting it sit for a day and then dabbing it up works best. Next we have a carpet cleaner that gets used occasionally (sometimes used with Nature’s Miracle)but we still have the carpets steam cleaned about 2x per year. Within the next 6 months we are pulling off all the carpets (they’re 20 years old) and replacing the carpet and mat underneath, plus, adding a layer of Kilz paint/sealant over the floor to completely seal the wood underneath. I don’t think an air filter will do the job as you only mask the results and never touch the source.
Biggest problem with cats is that once they pee someplace if there is even the slightest remaining odor, they’ll repeat again and again. They like to compete in this manner. Whew!

Thankd,
Getting rid of the cat is not an option. I would be viewed as the most cruel, heartless, unfeeling, etc beast that walked in human form.... |

The cat just needs appropriate medication. I heartily recommend 230 grains of metallic lead, delivered intercrainially at about 800 feet per second.
