Black Powder Firearms

I got the chance to have alot of fun over the last couple of days. My neighbour bought a replica civil war army black powder pistol from Cabellas Tuesday evening. Wednesday, we took it out to the back of his property, and fired of a few rounds. These things are awesome - enough so, that I bought one for myself last night as well. Even the process of loading one is fun.

Anybody else fire black powder weapons?

I do and have for almost 20 years.

One word to the starter clean clean clean clean, BP is highly corrosive. Get T/C black powder cleaning liquid and soak your patches in it. Put them in a pill bottle and you have wet patches to do field cleaning so you can keep your accuracy. BP accuracy falls dramaticly if the barrel is not cleaned between shots.

Nice looking rifle. Here's a picture of the one I picked up last night - swiped from the Cabella's website:

Oh yeah, mine is the round barrel, instead of the octagon pictured. My neighbour bought the octagon barrel, so I bought the other one so we could tell them apart.

I always cleaned mine with scalding hot water, then oiled 'em up big time. Haven't shot any black powder for years but I have noticed they now have black powder specific solvent.

Make sure you have planty of grease on hand to fill each chamber once it is loaded. If you fail to grease the chambers you can have a disatrous chain fire. I had one, was very lucky in that I didn't get hurt but the gun was toast afterwards, all because I got lazy (or in a hurry...can't recall) and didn't grease up. Three chambers went when I touched of the first one

I shoot bp guns too. Pistol, rifle and a 1/4 scale Napoleon twelve pounder cannon. Pistol is a Remington and the rifle is a Thompson Center Renegade 50 cal. Instead of bp I use Pyrodex. Still corrosive but easier to clean up. I just use hot water followed by a oil down using the same TC grease I use for my bullets.

A biker friend of mine years ago had a 45 BP pistol. We used to shoot it in his backyard in a rough part of Seattle (!?!). Made a hell of roar and flash. I don't know how he never got busted for that.

BTW, I like your new avatar better 'n the old one. The first one had kind of an awkward hitch in the step when it was cycling back to the endless loop thing -- sorta detracted. I know, everyone's a critic.

I ain't no gun confiscating, tax and spend liberal.... but uh, I'm not fluent in the nomenclature, not that I expect you to explain it to me.

The only "firearms" I own are two Walther CO2 pellet pistols, and they look like the real thing -- one has a red-dot scope. They're pretty accurate -- I guess they would be better than nothing in a scrape though if the other guy had a real gun, he might up the ante and waste my a$$.

Absolutely not. What you will very likely be successful in, is totally pissing off the "bad guy" when you start raising up welts on him with the pellet gun, and ending up a statistic yourself. My black powder pistol is one of two guns that I own. My other one is a .22 caliber Remington rifle. I wouldn't want to depend on it for home protection either. Both of my guns are used for target practice, making noise, and in the case of the rifle, offing the odd snake that wanders into my "no snakes" zone.

Hey DP ! Nice pistol! I just want to caution you on loading it. Do not use a heavy load in that gun. What will happen is that the brass frame will strech ! and the Colt uses a wedge to hold the barrel to the frame. the wedge will become loose and you open up the head space between the barrel and cyl and the gun will not shoot well and will probably spit or shave lead! Which is not good for someone standing along side you!

Yeah, I'm staying strictly with the powder that they recommended. The powder they sold me is in pellet form, and non corrosive as well. It's also recommended in the manual that came with the gun.

Very good point. About the only thing they would be good for would be to intimidate an unarmed intruder, or at least a gun-less intruder, since they look like the real thing. And if I did fire it, I wouldn't kill the guy, which would mean less hassle.

Acutally, these pellet guns will do more than raise a welt. I bought these two from a guy I worked with -- they were almost new. He had implanted a pellet in his finger (!?!) from holding his free hand under his grip hand and accidentally letting his finger wander up in front of the muzzle. It was the one with the red-dot scope, he showed me how it happened in hopes I wold avoid his fate. When you're looking through the scope, you're not looking at the end of the barrel -- I could see how it could happen to an amatuer. I'm glad he showed me. Kinda bummed him out on them. Said he couldn't tell if it had just left a bloody welt or what, but after x-rays, there was the pellet, completely below the surface of the skin. He still had the x-rays.

Dude was lucky he didn't make that mistake with a Glock! Wouldn't have had to worry about removing the bullet.

There was a piece in the news a couple of years back where a couple of teenagers killed a guy with a pellet gun. They just thought they were going to raise some welts on some guys they didn't like and they got one of 'em in the back and I guess there were no bones to stop it from getting into some organs. Who woulda thought....

This should be in the stupid things you did as a kid thread.

Back in the day we used Crossman 760's and 766, we found that if you did not pump the BB gun you could dry fire it with your finger over the barrel and get multiple BB's in the barrel sort of like a BB gun buckshot, which worked on grouse if you could get close enough.

Well in my dizzy early teens I seemed to have forgot that I pumped the BB Gun and shot a hole clean through my finger. My mother was mega pissed but my Great Granda Mother was staying with us whom my mother worshiped the ground she walked on said "Now there don't be bad boys will be boys" and I was off the hook.

Pyrodex, get the pyrodex spray cleaner it will make your life much easier when cleaning. You can spray in down the barrel and wait 15 minutes then run a few patches and your good to go.

But here's a real easy way and you'll have the barrel cleaned in to time.

1. Use the wet patches that I described above or you can buy wet patches.
2. Run them down the barrel until clean it should take 4-10 depending on how much you shot.
3. Run a dry patch (both side)
4. Run a patch with bore butter

And you're good to go the whole process shouldn't take more than 5 minutes.
