Topless in the Rain

Tonight I found out something quite intresting. I was caught in a driving rain, on the interstate, with the 107's top down. As I had passed the last overpass and exit for the next 13 miles, I was not looking forward to stopping in the rain to put up the top. To my surprise, continued driving at 60mph kept the rain out of the cabin! A little spray did dampen the back of the seats, and the rear-view mirror had a few drops on it, but for the most part, all stayed dry! I finally got to a bridge (13 miles later) and put up the top in the shelter of the overpass, but marvelled at the aerodynamics in play on this rainy evening ride.

Gotta love german engineering. I recall a similar event in an old '71 MGB and I, along with everything in the cabin, got soaked before I could get stopped to put the top up.

Maybe not. IIRC, don't get wet in either of my Triumphs with the top down. Perhaps it has something to do with the lower windscreen that the MG has- more like a "slit" to look out of. I had a '68 MGB and I always had to strain to see stoplights with the top up.

I almost never have the top up on the Healey. If I encounter rain, I just pick the speed up a bit and most goes over without getting me wet. If I could just find a good seal for under the windshield (the windshield folds down on the early Healeys) I would stay quite dry.

How do your engineers deal with stoplights

You should be banned for the misleading thread title. I got all excited thinking about sorority girls doing a rain dance or something.

There must have been something wrong with your MGB, or you're so tall your head stuck up more than 6" above the windscreen, I never felt a drop while motoring above 20 mph in the rain with the top down.

Med Mech, I apologize... I just D**n tired of no-one replying to my posts ( just kidding )... Oh, by the way, your avatar is mesmerizing...

MTI: The rain came over the windshiled and hit me from the back... covered the dash, etc in the ole '71MGB... Perhaps I was going too fast?

A264172: Not too many stoplights on the interstate ( I guess I forgot to mention I was on I59)... I did have to stop under a bridge before I got to my exit. I figured when I slowed down (and stopped) I was in for a soaking...

Experienced the same thing recently on I-75 in Ky recently. Started raining about three miles from our exit. Decided to just drive and see what happened. Bit of water came up over the top at each corner. Not too bad. Still put the top up as soon as we got off interstate. Good thing too. Had a real frog-drowner about 30 minutes later.
