an old idiot chased me 2day!!!!

so i was driving my 300d along and there were a row of parked cars on the other side, so my right of way cos it was down to 1 car width... another car driving towards me could have, and should have, easily pulled into a gqap between the cars but didnt, then had to slam on brakes so didnt hit and squeazed past eachother and when the drivers doors got level i looked and he was going mad and cussing me like it was my fault so i gave him the finger and drove off... looked in the rear view and he had got out of his car and was chasing after me... i was going to slam on my brakes and get out, but he looked like a druggie and probably had a rusty knife or something!!! he had a ford mondeo,, maybe he was just jelous!!!!!

Thats happens to me all of the time. People don't understand the right of way rules, but usually I can educate them.

As to the other idiot getting out of the car, you have to be careful out their. But don't worry one day he will get shot for doing that.

i always liked the mondeo(we had it as the contour) im becomming less and less smitten by this mercedes, its just too high maintenence.

this happened to me, except the guy was in a ford LTD and chased me down, wrecked into me(to pull me off the road, pinned me between his back fender and a telephone pole) and he proceeded to get out of his car with a knightstick, beating my brand new car(3 months old, my namesake) everywhere, breaking all the lights, ruining the paint and putting dents allover it. this man was super scary. i am just thankful he only had a stick(he hit me in the head with it through my open sunroof) or i would have been shot.

this happened in early 1998, i sued him for damages(insurance refused to pay because it was intentional, both companies) and he is still paying me 10 dollars a week.

never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever give a psycho the finger, yell at them, brake-check them, or provoke them in any way! i cannot communicate in words how dangerous that is!

i might sound like a pussy or some kind of non-confrontational, flight response, scrappy boy school drop-out but i'd rather be alive and thought a puss than to be found dead because i asserted my right-of-way in traffic!

is it *that* important, really?

The guy never went to jail? I would at least pressed charges and that incedent would have racked up quite a few points.

It was just about 5 years ago this month. I missed a flight going from Eindhoven, Netherlands to Hamburg, Germany and I HAD to be in Hamburg the next morning at 8AM, no option. The Eindhoven airport is tiny and there were no rent car counters open. There was an information window at this little airport with people who were very helpful. They called the rent car people and someone came over. In the meantime I looked at a map to see how far it was to the German border. As I recall it was only about 60km. I knew that once I got to Germany there would be no speed limit.

The rent car guy got there and I asked him if he had anything I could drive to Hamburg. At that point I would have tried it in a Smart car if that was all I could get. He looked and said that he had a Ford Mondeo station wagon that needed to go back to Germany. I had no idea what it was, but expected something not much more of a car than the Smart.

I don't remember how far it was to Hamburg, but I got away from Eindhoven about 5PM and made it through the traffic to the German border. That's when I started gaining some serious respect for the Mondeo. I don't know what it had under the hood but it was a five speed manual that I got along well with. The car would cruise at 220 with no trouble and could get to that speed in reasonably short order.

The traffic was a little heavier through the congested Dusselldorf/Essen area, but most of the road was pretty wide open. Being summer the sun didn't go down 'til late. Even after dark I let the hammer down pretty hard as long as I had a good fix on the tail lights in front of me and kept them at about the right distance which at that speed was probably a few hundred yards (meters since I was in Germany.)

I had no idea when I started, but the hotel I had reservations at closed their desk at midnight. I got there about five minutes before they closed and got checked in. After it was all said and done I was kind of glad that I missed my flight. I had a blast on the Autobahn and experienced driving another decent road car.

I traveled a LOT in Germany and all over Western Europe in 2000, some in 2001 and quite a bit again in 2002. I don't do that any more and I really miss it. I drove the Autobahns a LOT as a young man in 69, 70 and 71 and to me it is a little piece of Heaven on Earth.

Sorry for the rambling but since I can't drive on the Autobahn anymore I can at least reminisce about it.

Have a great day,

You're smart 123

and all the others who told you to swallow your ego and do the smart thing. I used to flip people off all the time when they would do something stupid. Then I had to go to driving class (speeding) and the instructor told us that one in eight people in Arizona drive armed! Yikes! I stopped flipping people off...no matter how wimpy, etc. they looked. Better safe than sorry over something trivial.

Best defense, when people try to approach your car because they or perhaps YOU made a bad manuver, get out of there if you can. Here's a good story for you.

Sometime in the 80's, before I was born, my mom, dad and older brother took a trip to Austin. My dad, was kind of weaving slightly, coming over on someone I guess, the guy in the other lane gets mad, starts going hysterical, cursing, and then when the car is stopped, he opens his door to get out to confront my dad. Dad had his .38 with him as he takes it on his road trips sometimes because of all those crazies, robbers and stuff on the open road, and my mom knew if the man started a fight, he'd get shot, so my mom looked the man straight in the eye as he walked toward the car and said "you get back in your car, NOW!!!" It worked! He got back in his car and left. But, the lessons learned from this...

Never weave, drive defensively
Stay in your car if you confront a bad driver who almost wrecks you, or a psycho who wants to "have a word" with you.
Finger signals, flashing lights, and blasting horns all because someone is going too slow for you in crawling rush hour traffic are all ways to get shot on the road here in Houston, so I refrain from that.

.....and stay out of Austin

if someone is acting crazy

i just look at them directly for a good little while and then look away. i make no faces or gestures. i look neither afraid or angry. i never respond in kind. as noted above things can happen.

Good advice. The last time I gave someone the finger, I was on a bike, and they ran me off the road, nearly dislocating my shoulder. The cops found them but would not support me pressing charges.

I always carried a pistol in my car at the time, because I worked in a bad part of town and sometimes didn't get off until late. This time, it was after midnight.

Anyway, I see what is happening, and I grab my pistol and jump out of the car and point it at the guy with the tire iron. He stopped when he saw that I was going to shoot him, and put up his hands, got back into the car, and he drove off.

PS - I think the man who got pinned in and hit by the crazy guy would have been 1000% justified in using deadly force.

me? deadly force?

i didnt really think about running away, the only thing(stupidly) on my 17 year old mind was "you just ruined my brand new car!, how are you going to fix it?" and then i rolled down my window because i (again, stupidly) thought i should ask him "why did you hit me?" i know now how to handle such a situation and am very thankful that i made it out of that one!

i chose the benz sort of for this reason, i was too big for my britches in my shiny new "zoomy" coupe.

should i mention i was hit 3 times on purpose like that? i used to drive like an ass and if someone tried to inch in on me i would honk and hold my ground, whereupon they would shrug, say to themselves "whos this fag in the purple neon trying to act like his spot on the road is actually his?" and then proceed to ram me to move me from their path? heh heh heh in the benz i have no choice but to be a safe. consciencious driver and it is overflowing into other facets of my life. i am very thankful for this!

i just had to be forced to get my head out of my ass and to drive like a sane person as opposed to everyone else scuttling about 30 miles over the limit, weaving, honking and eating their brakes!! thing is, it was self-inflicted. i guess i just had to make myself grow up. my father had to sell his college car because of the same reason(a nice gold mach 1) young people should NOT be gifted sports cars!!
