Disney/ABC radio personality Paul Harvey, one of the most widely listened to commentators in the United States, presented his listeners on June 23 with an endorsement of genocide and racism that would have been right at home on a white supremacist shortwave broadcast.

Harvey's commentary began by lamenting the decline of American wartime aggression. "We're standing there dying, daring to do nothing decisive because we've declared ourselves to be better than our terrorist enemies--more moral, more civilized," he said. Drawing a contrast with what he cast as the praiseworthy nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War II, Harvey lamented that "we sent men with rifles into Afghanistan and Iraq and kept our best weapons in their silos"--suggesting that America should have used its nuclear arsenal in its invasions of both countries.

Harvey concluded:

"We didn't come this far because we're made of sugar candy. Once upon a time, we elbowed our way onto and across this continent by giving smallpox-infected blankets to Native Americans. That was biological warfare. And we used every other weapon we could get our hands on to grab this land from whomever."

"And we grew prosperous. And yes, we greased the skids with the sweat of slaves. So it goes with most great nation-states, which--feeling guilty about their savage pasts--eventually civilize themselves out of business and wind up invaded and ultimately dominated by the lean, hungry up-and-coming who are not made of sugar candy."

Harvey's evident approval of slavery, genocide and nuclear and biological warfare would seem to put him at odds with Disney's family-friendly image. The media conglomerate syndicates Harvey to more than 1,000 radio stations, where he reaches an estimated 18 million listeners. Disney recently signed a 10-year, $100 million contract with the 86-year-old Harvey.

In 2004, Disney forbid its Miramax subsidiary to distribute Michael Moore's film Fahrenheit 9/11, even though Miramax was the principal investor in the film. A Disney executive told the New York Times (5/5/04) that it was declining to distribute the film because, in the paper's words, "Disney caters to families of all political stripes and believes Mr. Moore's film...could alienate many."

One wonders whether Disney executives are worried about alienating families who oppose slavery, nuclear war and Native American genocide.

Hard to tell where Paul Harvey's words end and the leftist spin begins.

For example, where is the closing quotation mark in this paragraph?

Not saying it was deliberately misquoted and spun, but it is certainly unclear.

I can't believe the guy said that, but I think it is typical of the thinking of old white guys.

You're right, that was a bit hazy. I changed it. I'm not sure exactly of the rules for quotation marks, but I've noticed that frequently they are left off of the end of a paragraph if the following paragraph is a continuation of the remarks and begins with quotes. Doesn't make good sense to me but I've seen it quite a bit.

I liked Paul Harvey a lot in my younger days and I don't generally consider him a fool, but this was a rather odd pronouncement. Some truth to it, but the question for me is do you want to model your civilization on that of Ghengis Khan?

**edit** Of course, my adding the quotes assumes that I know for certain what the original quote was. I think from the flow and tenor of the remarks, it was Harvey's words in both paragraphs.

I don't follow...do you mean that FAIR may be putting words in Harvey's mouth? I mean, stranger things have happened, but FAIR has not done anything like that in the past to my knowledge. Considering the degree to which they are a thorn in various powerful media conglomerates' sides, I think they would be savaged pretty severely if they did. The folks at FAIR are not amateurs. I'm sure they have a tape of the remarks.

Harvey has gone off on strange tacks like this before. I'll see if I can find some examples.

That only shows a few paragraphs, however, does it show Paul Harvey advocating biological warefare, genocide, or racism, or is he simply stating historical facts? At a quick glance I don't think I saw anything that was untrue in the Tribune article, neither did I see Paul Harvey endorsing genocide or racism. I guess I won't know the true context of his remarks for sure until I listen to the whole thing, but, at the moment, it looks like just so much more leftist misinformation. It's easy to spot the lefty buzzwords in the first sentence....

"an endorsement of genocide and racism"

"white supremicist shortwave broadcast"

I'm like Rash Limburger, I can spot 'em a mile away.

Nope, but it seems to be an indicator of the author's bias.

He's saying that Paul Harvey is a genocidal racist. Can the F word be far behind?

In a nutshell, he suggests that genocide, slavery, and nukes are the tools of the trade that led to our success as a nation, and that it's foolish to abandon them now. I don't see dropping nukes on an already defeated enemy or giving smallpox-infected blankets to native Americans, or 'greasing the skids with the sweat of slaves' as high points in the history of American culture, which should be admired and emulated. Paul Harvey apparently does, and suggests that we return to that very path, which led to our success.

He stated an assortment of historical facts. Far as I can tell they all appear to be true.

Ok, I'm just going to throw in my two cents here. I have listened to Paul Harvey's audio. Why is it that when someone DISCUSSES an issue, it is assumed as an endorsement? All Paul Harvey was saying, which is being completely blown out of proportion by the liberal media, is that as a leader in this "war that will never end", we've gone soft.

Our own media would much rather publish photos of a prisoner on a leash than show the savagery of the beheading of Nick Berg. Our own media would rush to print erroneous reportings of the Quaran (Koran) being flushed down the toilet than photos of women actually being able to go to school because of what our soldiers have done. Pander, pander, pander. This is why we're not winning the war. His examples of slavery, etc. are just to show you HOW FAR WE'VE COME in political correctness, not endorsing those horrific acts, but now we allow terrorists to control what happens to themselves in OUR PRISONS??????? HAve you seen Sadaam Hussein lately? Looks like a MILLION BUCKS! There is middle ground aplenty between the atrocities of the nukes and slavery and the inmates running the asylums. He is just trying to find that middle ground. Listen without prejudice and you will hear the truth. The right is not right in this war. The left is not right in this war. There is another answer in between.
