Saw War of the Worlds today

Was a bit dissappointed, but it may be that all the special effects just aren't that special any more. Cruise was so-so, but tell me why EVERY story that has a father/son or mother/daughter relationship has to have the kids hating the parents every time? This storyline is definately old school.

Thanks for the head's up. I was interested when I first heard about it, but after having seen the previews for it I figured it wouldn't be that great. Maybe I'll check it out on DVD.

Just go in matinee time, ticket was $3.50...

I thought is was the better of the two H. G. Wells movie remakes,

The Time Machine was neat, I mean just looking at that gold colored machine was fun...

War of The Worlds was very neat in my opinion... I loved the look of the tripods! Story was alright...

Robbie should not have had the fate that he did.

Because that's life.

In reality, most people pass through stages in which we variously think our parents god-like, then think they're drooling idiots, and finally reach some sort of accommodation and acceptance with them. Parent pass through a parallel universe in which they are totally responsible for drooling poop machines, wonder who the real parent of that teenager is upstairs that spends money like a haemorrhagic lung dissease and are astonished to later meet a rational adult emerging from that most unlikely chrysalis.

Stories that portray or explore conflict are the most compelling. Transitional events in life are common across cultures and time. So properly constructed, most people on planet Earth can relate to them. Done poorly, they're just a trite rehash of a tired story.

But look at any story with a compelling plot and you'll find a rehash of a coming of age story wrapped within a bangled plot.

It's Spielberg/hollywood- he/they always has to have annoying whiney kids in it!

I'm in two minds to see it or not; I like me sci-fi and I'm a fan of the book and the musical version so i'll probably cave... if anything just so see how many times there's the trademark Spielberg shot of showing the actor's face looking shocked/suprised/awed for about 1/2 an hour before showing us what they're looking at...

Bot,
Thats some critique!
So all of the world's lit resolves basically to a coming of age story. Well, that saves me a LOT of reading; I already know the story. Thanks for all the time you freed up. ( Now I can go back to watching all the MGM musicals without guilt--the muscials are a feast for the eyes and ears, but a short on plot)

I can't go see it. That Dakota Fanning scares the crap outta me. If she were my daughter I'd hide the knives and sleep with my door locked.

All the world's a stage. --William Botnst, Stratford.

You can quote me on that. Get the spelling right.

MS Fowler, I think there are several paradigms one could use. The one that I proposed is most useful for me, but there are others involving archetypes or what have you. If you find this kind of idea interesting, Joseph Campbell, RIP, is the man for you. His research into trends and archetypes of mythology describes common mystical themes in the human experience. I believe George Lucas used Campbell's theories in Star Wars, especially evident in the first one in theatres. But you could also take a psychodevelopmental perspective. It maybe that the paradigms themselves are of the same origin but use different symbols.

I would like ot see it but I cannot bring my self to contribute to the bank account of Cruise. I saw and read his interviews and I have come to the conclusion that he is a freak. I think his beliefs are out of wack and I will not support him.

So now there are two folks off my viewing list. Him and Mel Gibson. Oh well.

I understand Cruise, but MEL?
My list is a long one, including Hanoi Jane
Barbara Streisand
SMART ALLECK baldwin
sean penn

and more

The SOUND effects were AWESOME !
movie was good
transistioning from the machines doing their damage to becoming unstable and falling down wasnt good. It would have been better to have more aerial shots from distance, having the machines doing lots of damage, and shown it worldwide, like seeing the eifel tower going down (well, that must be the anti frenchie in me)

and to see a large number of the machines marching on, and then suddenly start to collapse woud have been much more effective

You probably know this, but Star Wars, the first three anyway, got a big help from the Kurosawa movie, "Hidden Fortress," a fine movie in its own right. It can be a fun game to watch it and see who can spot the plot devices that Lucas borrowed.

Lucas and Spielberg financed a couple of Kurosawa's last movies because the Godzilla watching Japanese public apparently was not interested, hence Japanese movie moguls kept their wallets closed. Just the greatest film-maker of all time, and I'm not the only one who thinks so. Rashomon, Yojimbo, Stray Dog, Ikiru, Red Beard (especially), Seven Samurai, Dersu Uzala, and more, all fascinating and groundbreaking. The spaghetti westerns Clint Eastwood starred in were inspired by Yojimbo. Seven Samurai inspired The Magnificent Seven.

I am a child of survivors and I am uncomfortable with how he dealt / did not deal with his fathers statements about the holocaust and WWII. I also am very uncomfortable with his religious beliefs.
