M'Shop banned

where i work that is. extreme paranoia in corporate land - the proxies block web email, forums etc. i was surprised that such a valuable resource got on the list. i wonder if the OD forum had anything to do with it...

Maybe they are screening for the word "shop", so people don't do online shopping during work hours.

funny thing is those aren't - amazon, shop.com, buy.com, even EBAY is accessible! i guess there is a threat in the form of malicious attachments one can get on webmail and forums but then they blocked yahoogroups which doesn't keep attachments

Wasn't there a thread about a year ago asking how many M.Shop forum members were posting on M.shop from work!

I know one member here posted continuously from the time he arrived at work, till the time he left work, can you guess who that was? Wonder if he works for the government?

Where I work, any 'vehicle' related site is blocked. The funny thing is I can read Cosmo (if I were so inclined), I can play my strat game of Utopia all day long but damned if I want to look at a MB or a BMW. Very bizzar. No one has an explanation.

It's the eventual revenge of the IT departments. Long ago, back in the stone age days of the 70's, those pocket protected terminally geeky men and women ruled the corporate information kingdom, with their secret languages of COBOL and FORTRAN, giving access to computer time like MacArthur Foundation grants . . .

Then personal computers running VisiCalc, Wordstar and later, Lotus 1-2-3 started appearing on desktops, purchased by rebel workers breaking away from the IT empire, until the day of liberation finally arrived.

But now, the Empire has struck back . . . we're all slaves to the corporate IT stormtroopers again . . .

Don't be hatin' us IT guys. We surf a lot too! (probably moreso)

Blame corporate security...in typical paranoia fashion.

With the virus threats, spam, pop-ups, and all sorts of time-wasting, bandwidth-hogging stuff preventing users from getting any REAL work done, perhaps some firewalls monitor for that sort of stuff prior to allowing (or preventing) access.

I suspect MBShop violates some bandwidth protocol...

Echoing what G-Benz wrote, it could be that the IT guys are monitoring individual browsing habits and have gone after folks who spend a lot of work time at ……

I've had customers ask me to do the same for them. Imagine the unmitigated guile to think that folks who pay employees to do specific work actually want their employee’s efforts focused on what they’re paying you for! Gosh, what a concept

Some of them block any site with a message board on it....for obvious reasons.... Employees doing what YOU are doing right now, instead of working.

I think it's like G-Benz says.

I used to occasionally spend 5 minutes in the morning looking at my home town newspaper. Took maybe 5 minutes. Then one day I accidentally left it up in a minimized IE window all day. Been blocked ever since.

I was doing some research on inbreeding depression when Google first came out. I had been using Webcrawler and Hotbot, which did straight boolian searches. So I started Googling several combinations of words, often including, "gender", and "sex" and "reproduction" and "mating" and "sibling" and "cousins"...you get the drift. I learned an AWFUL lot, in pictures, about human depravity. I was looking for Hardy-Weinberg type stuff and got same amazing porno instead. Eventually I tagged "-porn", "-porno", "-credit card", "-join" and finally got to stuff I was supposed to be looking for.

The network porn police sent me a nasty-gram warning about internet usage. Okay, I visited some of the sites because, OMG! I took the network administrator's admonition seriously when you log on, "Users have no expectation of privacy." But I'm now a labeled sex-fiend.

Wanna buy some hot sheep pix? Ewe!

Inbreeding depression is quite the hot field of study now isn't it?

No, but hey, all seriousness aside, I'm lucky I'm not paid to do something with a high speed web connection at my fingertips all day. I'm one of them blue collar grunts....damn, y'ought to hear me grunt when I pick up a big board.

But oh mah god, I know I'd be tempted to surf way too much iff'n I had a T-1 at my disposal. I like, feel ya'all's pain and stuff.

Back before the WWW, I'd waste more time than a Congressional committee. But since about 1996 or so, it's been more routine. What it has done is make me completely impatient with most services. When I download stuff at work, it is nothing to get a big file. I downloaded over a TB in a couple hours (pissed-off everybody else on our LAN...). Now we have a bunch of 500 GB hard drives that we ship as needed. That's a massively parallel data transfer in realtime.
