Anyone into any type of martial arts?
Just trying to start a new conversation here.
I've been taking Krav Maga, which is the Israeli defense force official fighting style for about 6 months now and I love it. Eye gouging, trachea strikes and as well as all types of blocks kicks and throws are the norm The general rule is, there are no rules! Anyone else into any other martial arts?

Sniff. Brings a tear to my eye

I used to study a family kung fu style (Lung Shou Pai) until it hurt too much. Got to my mid-40's and switched to Yang style Tai Chi. Tried Chen style but my teacher moved. Tai Chi doesn't hurt my body the way external arts do/did. I still practice the kung fu forms occasionally just for balance, timing and breathing. No weapons.
The will to spar and fight left me over a decade ago. I wish I knew some other ol' fart to play with here. Most folks around here are into karate or tai kwan do. Also Lotus Self Defense, derived from tai boxing. I tried that for a year. It hurts, too. Bruises last a long time. My job wouldn't be easier if I showed-up with a black-eye or something every week or so. |

Taekwondo. Just for fun/workout, I'm no fighter. I'm about a flexible as an iron floor joist and about as graceful, so I figure it may help.
Medmech, I thought you were being pretentious then I googled the words. Nice one. I'd be a billionaire if I could harness all the energy I've put into the pursuit of konzenkoushou into the pursuit of money.

I did judo when younger, freestyle wrestling in highschool, Shidokan Karate for several years coupled with Thai boxing in college, and then tai chi. At the same time I was a competitive bodybuilder in Missouri and Chicago, natural contests, BTW. I could hold my own I suppose, but I was testing for a belt at my shidokan school and was knocked out, literally, by a woman my age who was the femal Chicago golden glves boxing champion.
I miss the intensity of it all, and the cardio factor. I can still throw some weight around in the gym but when it comes to fighting or sparring I know better, I just don't have the wind for it. Every once in a while I think I'd like to go back and may. The isreali style is very effective. I've seen it in action afew times. Here's my old teacher: http://www.odekake.us/ad_shidokan.htm He's in the bottom left hand side of the page. |

Went to the US open for point sparring, got my ass handed to me by the guy who ended up winning the thing. Got tired of it, wasn't much of a challege anymore so i dropped it, whishi hadn't. Anyway, i'm ****ing drunk its 3am i'm going to bed, you and your crazy questions about the past.

on another note, look up "Jim Graden" in google, thats who my instructer was. Used to be one of the best back when he made people work for their belts, one of the reasons i dropped was because it was starting to seem more and more you paid the money you got the belt. Pure bull**** if you ask me, getting a black belt back in my day took alot more than just money(eg sweat, practice, time, ya know the usual **** to get good at something). I quit once it became expected that you paid your money you got the belt, it was pure and total bull****. My brother was an instructer at that school for a long time, and even he became disgusted with it. A black belt is something you earn, not something you pay for. Oh man that pissed me off when i saw delinquants that never practiced a day in their life passing their black belt test. I think thats when i gave up on martial arts, its an art, not a money form.........damnit. If i knew for a fact i could find a school like the one i started many a year ago, i'd be back in a heartbeat.
