Job with the USPS?

Anyone know how to get one? Everyone I talk to says its kinda hard, but I signed up to take the exams, like 10, haven't heard anything back from them yet though. Just seeing if anyone has any secrets that might help.

But seriously, the postal civil serpent exams, unless they have changed a lot, basically just see if you can read, write and cypher (not that they won't hire someone who can't ). It used to be that the tests were given rather infrequently, I imagine that is still true. So after they conduct a test session, they have a large pool of candidates to pull from. Some of the candidates may get special preferrence which puts them at the head of the line (veterans, etc). It generally takes a while, but eventually you will get called.

If you want a job with the USPS you either have to be a veteran....or a minority.

the testing is seriously stacked against you if you if you are a white guy.

I know, I havent seen a white mailman since my last house and he was a vet. But I talked to vets and they have to get in line like anyone else, and its not as kool as they tell you when you join the service, you always have a job at the post office. But I'm hoping because the mail people I have dealt with are morons, that I'll get the spot. I mean, I know someone that just got hired on at 18 an hour! and shes worth like 4 at best. She bought a Mazda 626 because it does 0-60 in 4.5 seconds.... They say to get the job you should score at least a 90-100, but around here, I'm sure they're lucky to see 40s. But just in case, when they ask what race I am, I can mark any of the boxes! Of course, in California, I AM the minority, and a white guy.

Apparently the questions are strange, like what does a stop sign say . Answer is nothing, cause it doesnt talk? I guess, from what I'm told.

Don't do it until you are over 40. Nobody under 40 should take a mind-numbing job. As long as you curiosity, initiative, and any ambition, stay away from USPS or any gov job.

When you get to be an ol' faahrt, you can take one and do well, because you have seen and experienced many forms of human depravity and are innured to the realization that life is unfair and no matter what, you're probably going to get screwed. If you're exposed too young, you think about ways of improving your lot. You are not capable of understanding that you cannot. All in all, you're just another brick in teh wall. From that harsh lesson at a tender age, young guys get into AK's and vengeance fantasies.

I can't imagine anyone WANTING to work for the postal service. Don't private sector jobs pay more? I always thought of it like, if you can't do anything else, be a mailman.

You know, I've often wondered about that.

I don't even know when I'm gruntled.

If I don't know when I'm wallowing in gruntle, how am I supposed to know when I'm disgruntled?

I dunno if I agree with that entirely.

First off, he didn't say if he is thinking about clerk (mail sorter) or carrier (yer basic mailman). I delivered mail for a few years when I was a lot younger. Very healthful job, walking in the outdoors all day. Gets you in great shape (unlike now which is kinda pear shaped). The pay is pretty good but not great. The bennies are pretty good. If I had stayed with it, I could have retired 10 years ago and found someting else to do for gainful employment / entertainment if I had so chosen. Delivering mail really isn't a bad job. There is, of course, some question about its future (like, how many more years before E-Mail takes over completely?).

Postal clerk, on the other hand, would seem to me to be just mind-numbing boredom, although some people do it for years and seem to enjoy it.

People thought that they would lose business because of emaila nd they did, but they make up for it with mailing more packages. When you order something via the 'net, it has to get to it's destination somehow.

Didn't make that up either.

True, their small package business has picked up over the last 10 years, but the biggest part of their actual revenue is from what we call junque mail. If technology finds a way to effectivly deliver that electronically, USPS is in deep doo-doo. E-Mail spam obviously isn't too effective as most of it is deleted without being read. Junque mail, although people all say the don't read it, it actually does get in your hand. Who know what's in the future?

It's gotta just keep declining, doesn't it? Geez -- when I was a kid, it was cheaper to send a letter across the country than it was to make a phone call. How about mail for 37˘ or a fax for 5˘? You're right -- it's all about junk mail now.

Personally, I wouldn't care to garner any type of reputation regarding a "small package", but that's just me.

I think that is a good insight.

Palangi, I was kind of trying to make a joke about it. OTOH, I really do think that folks in their late teens through mid-thirties ought to take risks before they 'settle' for something. A gov or USPS job is, IMO, settling.

What advances the world is NOT 40 year-olds and older. It is 15 year-olds to 30 year-olds. Risk takers who have an ill-conceived or ill-assimilated concept about the absolute finality of existence. People will take risks as long as they think failure is something that happens to others. Old fartism is when you know it can happen to you. As you get older, your liklihood of surving risk attenuates, so old fartedness is the handmaiden of reducing risk.
