Back to car talk

So I was checking out the Infiniti forum to see what they are up to these days. One guy actually was elated that a SLK-AMG was able to "hang" on his tail. He actually believed that his G35 can out run and out perform an AMG. I just had to break the news to him, the G was in no match with any AMG cars, and that he was "played". Stat for the SLK-AMG: 355 hp and 376 lb-ft torque. Stat for the G35: 280 hp and 270 lb-ft torque.

I like my G. But I have to tell you, nothing more fun than some German Engineering.

The SLK is a pretty weak AMG to, well by AMG standards at least! Tell him to go find and race an E55 or an SL65.

The first thing I would do to any AMG car is remove all the badge's. My E55 would have E320 badge's on the rear to mess with the un suspecting.

Can you post the link? Reading this thread might be fun.

I don't really understand.

Late last year I raced a G35, shifting normally - using drive and it's 2nd gear start he beat me, not by much.

At the next light I pulled it down to 1st, and walked away from him.

90 SL500 - stock, although fresh from a tuneup.

It's a coupe. There is no way a G35 can out paced a SLK-AMG. Even from a dead stop. The G35 weights 3,512 lbs where the SLK-AMG weights 3,300 lbs.

kknudson,
The G35 pulled away from you from the dead stop because your SL is far heavier. But once you have enough rpm builds up, you can blow his doors off.

Pull the SL down into first out of the hole and it really can get up and go.

It was a coupe, and he had it all hung out. I think he even timed the light better than I did.

Both races were from a light, 2 lanes to one. The first he came out hard and caught me by surprise. I wasn't planning on racing, but I had to merge, and didn't have quite enough room to get ahead of him.

The second time he goosed it before the light changed (braked torqued), so I new he wanted to race, and I wanted to see what this thing could do. So we did. This time I had a lot more time before the lane ended, but I didn't need it.

He pulled up next to me in the left turn lane at the next intersection, smiled and waved.

It was a gentlemans race, not two kids f'ng around.

I was sitting at a light yesterday in the SL with the top down. A new PT Turbo Cruiser pulled up beside me,,,, he had the top down also. Do you ever have that feeling that this guy is going to mess with you ? I slipped it into first, and as we took off I heard his turbo spool up and I never looked over,,,, just nailed it in first and all I could see in the mirror was doors hanging off the PT. Now this wasn't my race, he nailed it first wanting to show his wife how he could beat up on this slow Benz. Best part of the story is, today, a PT Cruiser Convertible pulls into the shop for an estimate. Boy,,, this car sure looks familiar. I asked the lady who drove it in, if she happened to be up where we had our little encounter yesterday. She looked at me, and said,,, "Was that you ?" I just nodded and she laughed her butt off. Said her husband thought the Cruiser was so fast and had been racing everything he could, and was truly shocked at how bad the Benz blew him away. Fun and games.

Gotta agree MM. If I had the ching to spare I'd have me one of those grocery getters in a heartbeat.

Those guys are generally a tad young, so take whatever they say with a grain of salt. It took me awhile to get used to them.

Benz times are way off. I Believe the 500 would beat a infiniti any ol day. Hell, the CE's quoted at like 16.6, but I beat cars that do 15.5s. Mostly bad driving on the other guys part, but still.

Skirmish with an SLK 55 AMG today..
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

First things first. Disclaimer here.. I'm not a "street racer". But I do like to push every now and then. Just being honest. So, If you don't condone any types of spirited driving on public roads, please stop reading now.

Well, coming home today around 6:00 PM minding my own business.. very light traffic, relaxing, sun still out but getting darker, just listeng to music. Out of the left corner of my eye I see a benz.. black, amg wheels.. omg, the thing was sweet. I was in chill mode, so wasn't thinking about fooling around.. persay. I happen to get behind the guy at a light.. three lane highway (hwy 210 heading towards DC). A few cars are in front and on both sides of us. The light changes, and he starts doing 15 to 50 mph pulls.. you know, slowing down a bit, letting space get between him and the car in front of him to do this. This happens like 3 times.. revving his engine at lights, the works. That V8 engine note was beautiful btw.

So anyway, he's basically goading/ teasing me.. and goads me one to many times. Probably bragging to his 110 pound girlfreind in the passenger seat. He pushes off a bit, this time to get onto an off ramp towards DC, from hwy 210 to hwy 295. I'm like "ok then, I'll play", and at the last second turn off to follow. Now he knows its on.

I basically get on his a$$. We both push it, slight right incline to a straight, then to a long 25-30 ish degree left turn, both of us maintaing control, both cars hugging the road, (actually gaining on him a bit) suspension bouncing on slightly uneven pavement, to a down hill straight. Both on the limit.. and I'm still right there with him. I'm thinking I was in his draft, so I'm figuring that is helping me out a bit.. or he was somewhat timid, or a mixture of both. Even so, I gotta say, I was really proud of the G35's handling (19's sports suspension). Being as heavy as it is, when you aren't thinking about it's weight, especially being in the heat of the moment, it truly handles like a sports car.. vcd off. I was definately one with the car.

Anyway, we hit a few spots of traffic (65 mph is considered traffic at this point) on 295, both of us itching for traffic to open a bit to get a lane. I work my way up front this time, and push it hard, losing him in some traffic.. but slow up so he can catch up, and he gets behind me. I'm in 4rth gear at about 4500..down shift. Had very little rpms left, didn't get a good boost to redline. Probably should've slowed a little more and then downshifted. Anyway as I was saying, I downshift to 3rd and push WOT, we split lanes (I go right) and I see him in my left view mirror two lanes over, basically starting to walk me.. pretty decisively, on a straight stretch of road to a slight 15 degree right. Then more traffic. At this point I'm like ok.. time to shut it down.

Just wanted to see what the slk could do. Expected to get blasted.. and more than likely would've if it were just a stop light race. I'm sure this guy thought I had something under the hood, or was perhaps thinking to himself that stock '05 G35's where better than he thought. Perhaps he wasn't that great of a driver. In any event, he'll definitely think twice about the next G coupe he sees. Ok.. maybe he won't be thinking about it too hard .. He has an slk 55.. but I'm sure the G35 has earned some respect points today.

If you guys actually drove an AMG, I think you might change your mind about wanting it in manual. And plus, the percentage for manual cars is allready small enough, but the people who pay that much money on cars usually don't want manual trans. If you look at a lot of Ferraris and Lambos, they too are autos suprisingly.

My parents have an E55 AMG, and its absolutely unbeliveable. The tiptronic mode isn't bad, but its SO great being able to beat the pants off any cars on the road, by just slamming down the pedal and not even having to shift a gear. 0-60 is fast, but whats even faster is how you can slam the pedal at say 40, or even at 90, and the car accelerates at the same insane rate, all the way up to 140 (fastest i've been) in what seems like a few seconds. Its a luxury car on steroids. Of course, the only gripe I have about it, is while the handling is great, its still not as nimble as even the G35 is, which I think is very nimble considering its weight.

But the G is a coupe and the E is a Sedan. Totally two different setup.

The interior is good for smaller people. I'm 6'0" and have very broad shoulders and lats, and the seat was too narrow for me. That seat design puts a new meaning to the words side bolsters!!! It must have been designed for really narrow people.

I thought about that too. But we where doing a lot of turns and long bends. I honestly don't think the guy was that great of a driver that he could toy with me that well. I think he would've been eager to show me up. Pound for pound I think the G 35 can handle with the best of them, and it really showed. I almost passed him on that long bend.. but it would've been too much of a risk, other cars where coming up quick. Not to toot my on horn.. but I'm a hell of a driver.. I had the "no limit button" turned on (not the reckless button), and again, he might not have been much a driver. When we got to a straight.. of course I was getting eatin alive. It was great.

Don't believe everything you read. For instance, I've seen 0 to 60 times for the 6mt Coupe ranging from 5.5 to 6.1 seconds. That's a pretty wide margin if you ask me.

This is why you dont race on streets. Too many variables and end up with too much coulda have, woulda have, and maybes. Not bashing on street racing it's just after reading it I still don't know if you really would have passed it on bends.

Yes, I totally agree with you. Most of them are in their earlier 30's and mind you I am the oldest member of their National G Club here in the NOVA/DC/MD chapter.

I attended numerous of their DIY meets, and they are very good at working their cars. We even did a complete intake mod right in the parking lot for one member. Those who don't want to get their hands dirty were tending the BBQ pit. When we went out for a GTG drive last time, I left half way because they are just public hazards on the road. Picture about 30 G35s racing each other on the Beltway in excess of 100 mph!!!! And some of them even drove on the shoulders.

None of them have ever owned an Autobahn muncher before. They come up the rank from souped up Hondas and Toyotas, therefore the G35 is their new status symbol as it sells twice as much as their old cars. Don't get me wrong, all of them are intelligent people. Most of them work in the computer and defense industries. Two of them are even resident doctors. At least they are not your typical ricers. They won't mod the exterior of the car.
