Exxon Mobil Becomes Focus of a Boycott

Think it'll become a trend?

WASHINGTON, July 11 - A coalition of environmental and liberal lobbying groups is planning a boycott of Exxon Mobil products to protest the company's challenges to warnings about global warming and its support for oil and gas exploration in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

The boycott is part of a public relations campaign to brand Exxon Mobil, the nation's biggest oil company, as an "outlaw," the groups say.

A spokesman for Exxon Mobil said in an e-mail message that the company did recognize the risk of climate change. The spokesman, Russ Roberts, said Exxon Mobil had committed to "investments and strategic planning that address emissions today, as well as industry-leading research on technologies with the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the future."

But the company has also supported groups like the Competitive Enterprise Institute, whose work has challenged some generally accepted scientific models that predict the speed of climate change and the severity of its consequences.

On the question of Arctic drilling, Mr. Roberts wrote, "We believe that with more than 30 years of industry experience on Alaska's North Slope and with recent technological advancements, ANWR can be developed with little threat to the ecology of the coastal plain."

Energy enterprises have long provoked environmentalists' opposition over specific projects. But it has been a long time since one has been the target of a nationwide boycott.

Lee R. Raymond, Exxon Mobil's chief executive, has been an outspoken skeptic about the widely held view among climate scientists that human activity is responsible for the current warming trends.

Among the groups involved in the campaign, scheduled to begin on Tuesday with nationwide press conferences and a new Web site, www.exxposeexxon.com, are the U.S. Public Interest Group, Defenders of Wildlife, the Sierra Club, the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Union of Concerned Scientists and Move-On.org Political Action.

Carl Pope, the Sierra Club's executive director, said the goal was either to get Exxon Mobil to change or "to encourage other oil companies" to improve their environmental stewardship. The company was chosen, organizers said, because its record is worse than its competitors'.

"The other oil companies have aspirations" for environmental performance, Mr. Pope said.

What a stellar group to associate with. These silly boycotts have zero effect on the bottom line. I know why they get press attention, but I'll let BHD tell the rest of the story...

I wonder if anyone has checked into just what those people drive that whine so much about drilling for new oil. I bet their average milage is far below the national average.

I luv my Mobil 1 OIL

I'm buying a Hummer this afternoon, draining out all the fluids that Mobil sells and replacing it with Mobil stuff. After that, I am going to fill up the tank with Mobil gas.

My initial reaction to this boycott was that Exxon/Mobil isn't any better or worse than any other oil company, so I figured I would ignore it. Then I heard Exxon/Mobil's spokesman respond. He blamed the boycott on "political correctness." Well, I don't know about you, but that defense is pretty well worn out in my opinion. If he had anything good to say, he wouldn't be complaining about PCness.

I avoided Exxon stations because of their response to the Exxon Valdez spill. It was so long ago that I don't even remember what my complaint was, but I think I will go back to avoiding Exxon/Mobil stations. That PC comment really got under my skin.

On the other hand, the wife's Honda has a VTEC engine with all that variable valve timing mechanism, so I think I'll keep buying Mobil 1. I guess I am being entirely unprincipled about this thing. Oh, well. Nobody's perfect.

I'm boycotting them until I drive by one and need gas, and i'm going to buy a fountain pop instead of the expensive bottles.

That'll hit em where it hurts.

fountain pops have a higher profit margin than the bottled brands.

I've got a bunch of XOM stock. I will be surprised if it has much effect on the stock price.

People should be commending Exxon for the way they handled the Valdez spill, they spared no expense to make sure the job was done. It didn't take a court or boycott to get them to do it either. We should be embracing US based oil companies not wasting bandwidth with boycotts.

Ok time to Moveon. :flamethro

You mean they don't ride to their protests on their wooden wheeled bicycles?

Have not bought since Valdez.

After reading the legal briefs re: Exxon appeal of fines for the Valdez spill, I have not bought a gallon of Exxon and now same is true for Mobil fuel. If you read those briefs... I think people would be shocked. They spilled the oil, but didn't want to pay to clean it up. They said it was going to cost 'x' to repair the damage and make restitution. In the end they were off on their figures, so were asked to pay the rest, that they didn't figure on. They refused and are STILL fighting it to this day.

Sleazy company. The games they play, Alyeska runs things like a circus too. Once you start to read about how they don't want to maintain the line anymore... it is clear what you are dealing with real trash.

For fun, read about the time the line got shot (hunter error)... read about the bullet clamp they were to use, and how they couldn't figure it out. If it wasn't such a shame, it would be funny.

But what the heck can we do? We've pissed off the Arabs because we let the Israel force them off their land, so yeah, naturally we've got to drill on our own dirt. It's just a shame we can't do it right.

Heck, if we could do things right we'd have lots more nuclear plants and I wouldn't be writing this message! Think about that. :)

Oh well... Took it a little off topic but I think the point is there.

:) Pete
