I've been reading through the SL archive

And I came across this thread. It is funny. I imagine all you SL guys have seen it already, but there's a lesson here for everybody. Buy an old used car, and you better love maintennce.

Consider This Before Buying Sl's

I'm glad I can do most of the repairs on my car, I don't think I could afford the kind of shop time I've put into mine....

I believe that was the longest running thread ever on the SL forum and I agree it was like the plague.

Very interesting read!

I just sold my 450SL Friday evening. My car was nearly as temperamental as that 380SL and was miles away from being perfect, but I was far more tolerant with my wows with it! My SL seemed to get me in trouble in other ways, big trouble! I began to call it a "bad luck car" and more recently one with an incident at a gas pump! I'm happy it's gone!

My 87 300D is, and has been, a "good luck car" the same has been true with other cars in my past with mostly good luck cars, the 450SL just wasn't one of them, at least it didn't try to kill me like an MG midget tried to do that I owned 15 years ago, and I still feel physical pain in my back from that one!

Some one once said...." Bad news has legs.."

It's always the same.....everyone want's to tell you about the problems they have.....

Just how many SL's where built ?

'92 on SL280 / SL320 = @ 16,000.units

'88 on 500SL/600SL = @ 42500. units.

'89 on 300SL/24v = @ 37,000 units.

'85 on 560SL = 50,000 units.

'85 on 300SL/420SL @ 15750 units

'80 on SL500/500SL/SLC @ 27,000 units

'80 on 380SL @ 53,200 units.

(These production numbers are not perfect )

and so on and so forth......and how many are on the road still ?

Any one got any more facts ?

Ain't it the truth, Paul? I read, golly, over half of the emails. The guy was definitely out of his element. The crying shame is, that he spent a lot getting it runnign so he could sell it. Where is the logic in that? Heck, if you spend taht much and fix everything, why sell it?

If I spent that much money fixing it, I gaurantee it would be a legacy in my Last Will and Testament.

The SL crowd got tired of his whining more than once, and that was funny, too. They started out real helpful. But even kind, helpful people have a patience limit that doesn't respond well to abuse.

I skipped to the end of the thread. Apparently, he traded it for a Chrysler Crossfire.

A lot of it is perfectionism among the SL set. I drive a beat up old 84 380sl that looks like it has sat in salt water for too long. It has a billion miles, and all kinds of things that work occasionally or not at all. I abuse it and neglect it, and it is the most reliable car I ever had. After all, why spend all that money on brake jobs and front end repairs, when you can just wait for the wheel bearings to seize and then just do it all at once!

Huh, good ole Lynn Tussin. Totally forgot about him. Funny we used to think he was a she. Being a flight attendant and all. I still think he is an it, if you know what I mean Never seen any man whined like him.

After ten pages of his whinning, I was beginning to think something is wrong with my car!!

Hope he is happy with his Crossfire and never come back.

That was back when I had the SL. To bad I was on SL107.com instead of here back then.

That was an exhausting thread. I too remember his ramblings!

Probably did more damage to future 107 buyers than any thread I've ever read!
