They sound like real jets too. Can they make jets that small?

Yup, I once tried a ducted fan R/C jet years ago, but now there are real scale jet engines available to build around.

I can't imagine what a miniature turbofan or compressor jet engine with an afterburner would cost.

i used to be real big into model planes, at the peak of my hobby i even had a 1/4 scale laser 200. Those little turbine planes certainly are cool, and incredibly fast. Make no mistake, they are incredibly difficult to fly. For a typical .60-.80 sized aircraft with a turbine in it your looking at at least a few thousand dollars. The only crappy thign with having that much money in a plane like that is at some point almost all planes turn into lawn darts, there is simply too much to go wrong. Thats why i got rid of my 1/4 scale laser, everytime i took it up i was scared that i would loose the 6-7 hundred dollars i had in the aircraft. That plane sure could do some cool stuff though, such as hang on the prop and do a torque roll, as well as some pretty sick spins. The most fun plane i ever had was a little profile plane(profile means the the fuselage is basically just a sheet of wood, and the aircraft is designed with one purpose-stunt flying. I could put that plane into an inverted flat spin at any point in time, and everyone watching jaw's would just drop, then you pull out of the spin and do an inverted pass over the runway at 1ft Fun stuff back in the day, dont have time/money for it anymore.

I've got only one thing to say about that little jet.....Weapons....I want weapons on it! and of course, front and rear facing video cameras. No, this is a bad thing for my evil mind.

The plane was way cool, but for a real practicle use for a jet engine I saw this link to a jet powered beer cooler here on MercedesShop about 4 years ago! "We don't need no stinken wings to fly"

you can actually build a gas turbine engine out of a old turbocharger... just like the one linked above.

I have an old turbo in the workshop that someday I will build one out of ...

I have done many hours of research on this.. and could probably answer any questions.

A few yrs ago my (then) 12-yr old was tinkering with RC stuff. We saw a nearby gathering of an RC jet club/meet and went. I'm thinkin this is just for him, cuz I can fly a "real" plane so wut do I care about toys?

OMYGAHD. I was amazed at the stuff the little jets could do. Had a dogfight -- all kinds of aerobatic displays -- large scale -- small scale -- absolutely unbelievable. I did not want to leave, but after about five hours of staring straight up in the sky, my neck and eyes were shot. They also had a guy come over the runway in a J-3 (low and slow of course, no other way) tossing candy to the kids lined up on the strip.

If you ever get the chance go see, and hear, it -- do so.
