Question Why do people get rid of hood ornament???

I was going through the Performance Parts catalog and I noticed that they advertise a kit to remove the hood ornament and replace it with a "plaque."

Since many of us responded that the three-pointed star on top of the hood (my son used to call it the gunsight) was a Benz favorite feature, it makes me wonder why some people think of its removal as an upgrade?

I remember in the '80s people used to steal the star to add to their bling-bling collection. So people either just removed the star or anchored it to the hood.

Other than the newer coupes and the SLs, why remove the star drom a sedan?

Just curious.

Had a customer give me a plaque to instal in place of his Star....
Came back a few days later...."I want my Star back "

He just didn't like not seeing his gun sight on the hood....must say when I drove it on test for a/c repair, it seemed very strange not having that gun sight on the hood.

I find it to be a bit ostentatious, and I prefer to present a more low-key image--but I don't hold it against anyone for keeping theirs.

The hood star is the least ostentatious feature of a W140.

... because the star just gets stolen.

I had 2 stars stolen already from my grill. The second time, the star broke off cleanly from the base, and I just ground off the excess material. I have a second replacement star, but have not installed it - it will just get stolen again.

... and it gives me an opportunity to respond to people who care to ask, that I did not buy the car because of the star/cachet.
